I have had my takedown 3 years ago.  It seems that little by little I am developing more and more abdominal hernias.  I thought I had 2 , I went to the surgeon last week, he sent me for a CT scan.  And now I am going under the knife next week to repair  5 hernias - 4 abdominal, 1 inguinal.  I was just thinking.  Could it be possible that abdominal hernias for us j-pouch people are being created when we hold not going to the toilet for too long of a time?  like a long train or car ride when you feel like your belly is going to POP.  The guts swell up and pop through the stomach muscles.

Any thoughts about it ?

Thanks

I would not recommend to hold in your poop, that causes bacteria build-up which can lead to infections or pouchitis. Please go whenever you need too, I always go as soon as i feel it, i treat it like an emergency lol. Extensive exercise can cause hernias, overeating especially, and many other things. Have you been doing either of that?

Lauren, I don’t think there’s any evidence to support what you are claiming here, and you’re claiming a bunch of things. I have no opinion about when you choose to use the toilet, but that’s different from telling others when and why to do so. As far as we know, delaying trips to the toilet doesn’t cause infections or pouchitis, and it’s not an “emergency.” Excessive lifting is associated with hernias, but not other kinds of exercise or overeating.

@jjs Btw, holding in poop can lead to constipation which can lead to straining which can lead to hernias. I know a lot of people on this forum can be very negative but I just hope you give everything I said some thought.

Maybe one of the reasons you have up to 10 BM per day, is because you’re allowing your J Pouch to control you, rather than you control the Pouch.

Prior to my Takedown, all J Pouch literature provided by the Hospital, and guidance from Doctors, Specialist Nurses and my Surgeons, was; resist the urge to go when the sensation arises; and learn to control the J Pouch and allow the Pouch to stretch.

When I feel the sensation to empty my Pouch, I can easily wait and control the sensation for hours, without any urgency, discomfort or fear of an accident; in fact, not long after my Takedown, I posted to the forum, dispelling the fear of urgency for those considering a J Pouch.

More often than not, the sensation will pass and reoccur hours later, without it playing on my mind in the meantime.

Wow, good memory! I actually took the time to count my BMS and wrote them down on paper. This whole time I thought I went 10 a day, but I actually go anywhere between 13-20 a day. No wonder I have soo much butt burn XD. I am in the 9% of people that has over 13 a day.

Wow 5 hernias.  I know mine came from my J pouch surgeries.  I had hernia & reconstructive to abdominal wall surgery done last March. The surgery was rough but glad I did it.  I couldn't lift or exercise well with it.  Now I'm doing more of everything.

I also was told to hold bowel movements if possible. It will stretch  pouch.  Never heard of straining that would give u a hernia.  Best wishes on your surgery.

Thanks for not being mean about what I said. You would be surprised of the things that can cause hernias, be careful.
