Ok so i posted awhile back with what I thought were phantom pains after having my rectum removed, After that post, I started having other problems. First of all when I had my rectum removed, I started having problems with my bladder and urinating, I did not urinate but a few times a day at first after my procedure(maybe 2 times). As time has went on, I started urinating on myself, when I cough sneeze, holler, moved a certain way, I mean it is all the time, I started wearing a poise pad, I decided this ws from my surgery and that they cut a nerve or whtever, so a few months ago, i started having what i thought were phantom pains where my rectum used to be, There was alot of pressure and pain at times, There was a very strong urge to go,Then i noticed that my urinating issue got worse, i started peeing only half of what i normally would and it was frequently, I had the urge to pee all the time,Now I am having pain and pressure coming from inside my vagina and in where my rectum used to sit, I went and ruled out uti, bladder infection or kidney infection,i feel almost like there is something inside that i need to push out, i feel like i still have my rectum and i am being poked by something inside, I am sitting on a heating pad all the time and I have to force myself to go pee because the feeling of having to pee makes this pain /pressure worse, I am so afraid, I have a dr making me an uriologists appointment but I was just wondering if this sounds normal to anyone, or if anyone else has experienced this after losing thier rectum, or if any of you think this might be related to nerve damage? I read something on the internet about PUDENDAL NERVE , it sounds like what i have to a tee, but then again I am scared to death that maybe it is cancer somehwere down there, AlsoIt is only really affecting the left part of both my vagina and where myrectum used to sit, or I only feel it on that side of me, Please please if you have any information about what i am going threw please send me something back, I cant stand this anymore, I am so scared.

I am so sorry Becky..this just isn't fair.
I would tend to think of fluid collecting in the rectal region, an abscess, large pelvic cysts...I don't know much about nerve damange but I do know that cysts and abscesses can do this to you...push for that appt as soon as possible...it is not normal that you should be suffering like this.

do you think this could be a cysts or a pelvic abscess after a year and 7 months after my rectum removal?, sorry been up all night again.I sat in a hot bath at 3 am and cried. Mt butt and down my leg on that area is very sensitive feeling, almost like a slight burning sensation when touched,i dont think i can make it threw today, probably going to go to the er, i just cant stand this anymore, ty guys for your advice
Becky,
Butt and down the leg is often a sign of sciatic nerve problems (not uncommon when forced into long periods of bedrest or being forced to sit/stand/walk doubled over)...which could be a good thing...meaning that it is easily treatble as compared to cysts and abscesses...they treat with anti-inflamatories(sorry, I know you hate them), localised injections of cortisone (sorry again)and then therapy like chiro or physio..and light and easy exercise like walking...
I am not saying that that is it but you may be dealing with 2 things at once (often the case with us)...the rectal inflamation and a sciatic nerve...can I ask you to try something for me?
Do you have a tennis ball or any ball about that size and not too hard (not a baseball please)...
If you lay flat on the floor (carpet or matt is best)with your knees bent and place the ball directly under the area of you butt that hurts...and then using your butt/hips slowly roll the ball around so that it massages the area...it should hurt and help at the same time (kind of like a pain that is releasing knotted muscles)...if it works for you and you feel some relief then you can do it regularly throughout the day...it may not effect the other pain but at least you can give yourself some relief on the sciatic.
As for the pelvic or ovarian cysts...depending on the size...yes that can cause rapported pain elsewhere and can really hurt like the dickens...could be 3 things too...swollen rectal region, cysts that influence your urinary output and sciatica....either way you need to have it all checked out...for now, try the tennis ball (borrow one if you don't have any), work on 'mid-stream' exercises while urinating (stop the flow of your urine frequently while urinating to help rebuild the muscle reactivity) and I will give you a few more if you like (they had me reeducating the region post pouch creation...Every time I stood up the urine poured out...They did a contrast study and found nothing wrong so they sent me to a therapist who showed me the exercises...if there is no damage then they work very well.
By the way, try putting salt in your bath (buy a couple pounds of sea salt, add a few drops of your favorite perfume or essential oils like lavender to it and give yourself a bath that destresses the nerves at the same time)
Hang in there kid...hopefully they will get to the bottom of this.

ok so just to let you all know, I finally went on into the er, the pain got so bad i couldnt stand it anymore. The er dr did a pelvic exam and he thought he seen what was stool coming from the side of my vaginal wall. He asked me if i had noticed any stool coming fromt he area and I told him no just what i thought was old blood, So he did a ct scan and he came back and said i had a intro vaginal fistula. He then trnasported me to uva 3 hours away to my surgeon. my surgeon came in and said he would have to run a few more tests cause there was something def going on down there, So they decided to do another pelvic exam under anesthesia so they could better without causing me alot of pain, the report came back that there was no fistula or cancer, my cea was normal. they are trying to say that were I havent had a period in 4 yrs because of an ablation that it was pain from dryness and tightness int he vagina, ughhh lol. now i am no dr but i know that the pain i was feeling and still am feeling has nothing to do with that, I spent 5 days there and they released me. There was alot of swelling and scar tissue in the area he said, also have any of you heard of having your female parts shifted due to having your rectum out? my dr said that some of my parts were displaced because of the surgeries and having my rectum removed,, anyways i am glad that it wastn cancer or anything that required mahor surgery but I am still concerned about this pain i am having, is it possible the er did the exam and seen a fistula but by the time uva did theirs it had healed itself up? not sure about these fistulas, ty for all your help, becky
Sorry about all your pain and frustration, Becky.

There is no way a fistula could heal in the time it takes for you to go from the ER to another hospital. These things can take months or years to heal, if they ever heal at all. If the hole was so tiny it could heal in less than a day, it could not drain feces into your vagina.

That said, that does not mean you did not have the pain and other symptoms you were having. So, it is very good news that this is not a fistula...but what in the heck did they see on the CT scan? Could be inflammation and fluid collection there that makes things "muddy" and difficult to pin down as something specific, and based on a presumption of a fistula, it is easy to assume what they saw was a fistula (like maybe the ER doctor wrote "rule out rectovaginal fistula" on the CT order). Great news that there was no cancer, as I am sure that always weighs heavy on your mind...

As to your other question, yes, absolutely your uterus and vagina can shift due to the surgery. Probably not so much because of the colon removal, but because of scar tissue, inflammation, swelling, etc. Ligaments and connective tissue could have been cut or damaged in some way. So, yes, definitely possible, and even nerve trauma/entrapment that could cause chronic pain.

This probably does not help much, because I am sure you would prefer that there is sort of a "road map" to your insides where the doctors take a peek and say, "Oh there's a wrong turn at Albuquerque and we just need to straighten that out and she'll be fine." Unfortunately, it is more like somebody dropped the puzzle on the floor upside down and they can only assemble it without looking at the picture. Well, maybe not that bad, but you get the idea...

I didn't mean to make light of your suffering, but just trying to phrase it as a more simple concept. Hopefully, they can get this sorted out for you.

thanks jan, yeah I was thinking that maybe in the 5 days in the hospital that maybe it could have healed up, I never hadparts of feces coming threw, more like just a browinsh/muddy looking watery discharge, I thought it was old blood. That is what the dr thought he saw as well,The pain and the fluid had been going on for about 6 months but just got really bad when i posted to you guys on here,(the pain anyways), i was just wondering if they could have seen it on ct scan and then it was gone when they did a pelvic exam under anesthesia, I have nomore of the dark stuff coming from me and my pain is there but not as excruciating as it was, i am so confused, they did give me premarin estrogen to use in a cream for pain in my female area, I also read that they can use this to help heal a fistula too, Do you see my frustration? Today I got a packet of papers in the mail from uva medical center and they are wanting me to come to a female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery department to follow up, ughhh, anyways, so far the pain hasnt returned really bad but it is still there, thank you jan for all your help and advice.
