Hello. Has anyone with j pouch exercised or worked in the heat , compensated by drinking  more fluids and electrolytes well in advance, and still feel dehydrated,  then to pass several days of very liquid stool, frequent emptying and nighttime incontinence, and then, after that process things begin to return to normal? This happens every time at this time of year while working or hiking in hotter weather. It can turn a several day day hiking trip into a disaster, that feeling of being dehydrated and run down and sleep deprived from bathroom and clean up activity.  I am hoping someone is familiar and knows any preventative measures.

Each of us differs in how much fluid we lose through perspiration in a given circumstance, and how much fluid we can maximally absorb per hour. Nevertheless, I suspect all of us are able to create circumstances in which our rate of fluid loss exceeds the maximum rate at which we can successfully replenish it orally. It’s possible that you’re simply pushing too hard for too long.

There’s another possibility, though. Most of the symptoms you’ve listed sound very little like dehydration to me. It’s possible you’re out of balance in the other direction, pouring so much fluid and salt in that you’re giving yourself too much fluid that has to go somewhere, and disturbing your gut in the process. It can take a while to recover.

In the summer months I drink Gatorade zero - I mix half water and half Gatorade bc I still feel like it’s too sugary for me even though it’s sugar free. Anyhow, the flavor gets me to to drink more and I feel like to keeps me in balance.

I would also try and drink pre exercise/hike if the hike will be strenuous. I know I try to load up on fluids in the morning bc I wake up so thirsty from the night time, and my body needs it the rest of the day. Am I good at drinking and remembering? Heck no! Right now I’m dealing with 10+ kidney stones bc I need to drink more. So whatever works for you my friend!

10 kidney stones?!?!?!!! The Calcium Citrate not working???

do research on potassium citrate. im someone who took that/was given that med my a former urologist. i developed an electrolyte imbalance and hyperkaelemia and uremia and had to have emergency dialysis.





look into a drug called allpurinol to ward  off kidney stones, of the uric acid variety.  we are prone to dehydration and uric acid kidney stone develop.  i had an acute renmal injury requiring emergency temporary dialysis in 2018 summer time/june. very scary ordeal it was.  ask your  dr to try alpurinol. it has lessoned ability to cause such drastic.serious side effects.  id stay far away from potassium citrate

i came to the er with a potassiumn level of 7 and creatinine of 10 or somewhere. this was 3 years ago, but do some homework dont just take poassium citrate. i had chest pain and felt way off so when i went to emergency they said i had kidney failure and that was that,  they did emergency dialysis 3 sessions and my kidneys fully recovered over time.

i just deal with the kidney stones, i dont take any drugs to help ward them off. its a no no for me.

I only take calcium citrate bc I need calcium and the urologist told me the calcium citrate is better than the calcium carbonate. I guess the carbonate component builds up and creates stones vs the citrate component. See, I need the calcium bc of good old prednisone has done a number on my bones. Idk if I’d do the potassium citrate without asking first. But I do appreciate the suggestions everyone.

Your welcome. and yeah the prednisone thing is pretty common. I would mention pottassium citrate to the doctor and maybe see what he says? I hope the calcium works hon.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. I sounds like this is as good as it gets when it comes to hot weather and the bodies regulation of fluids.
‘I’ve tried many combinations of different fluids at different rates and always end up in the same bad way. Avoiding exercise and exertion on hot days is ideal but lately,  my work has  had  me having to push through  when summer’s heat is turned up. Bummer.
