My husband has had his jpouch since Jan. he had a temp. Osteomy for several months due to a long and sever battle with UC. They gave him his jpouch and ever since then he has had diarrhea all the time!! He can't stay away from the toilet not even at night! His doctors want him to try a shot calle Sandostatin or Octreotide to slow down his diarrhea. If anyone has been on this shot and has any response negative or positive please let me knowSmiler we just need some sort of answers! He is getting really frustrated.
Thanks!

Has he tried Metamucil? How about immodium? These should be over the counter, but I recommend metamucil.

How about probiotics like VSL3?

Has he been given Cipro? Cipro is an anti-biotic prescription drug.and it might be beneficial to him.

Let me know and perhaps I will have other suggestions for him. These are the first that come to mind.

I really think Metamucil which is relatively inexpensive would help considerably.

Thanks,

Solomin
i agree with Solomin.... there are many other options docs usually try first to slow down diarrhea and thicken stool. ones like Solomin mentioned: fiber supplements (metamucil, citrucel, benefiber, etc), lomotil, immodium.

also, Pepto Bismol, and even dietary adjustments like adding more carbs/breads. stool thickening foods like applesauce, potatoes, bananas, breads/bagels, rice, peanut butter might help (will have to experiment to see what works best). input may affect output.

what is his diet like?
I was told they don't like to say lomotil so much but it my case it might be needed. Also peanut butter, white rice and other things mentioned should help. Unfortutunatley things have changed for me so i am either or. Drink lots of water. also told to drink well can't think of name right now but makes the stool more firmer so will help come out better and eat four small meals instead of three.
I'm sure he is frustrated. I too, was very frustrated in the beginning. Honestly -- it took me a long time and alot of experimenting to come up with a diet that was good for me. I can assure you there IS alot that can be done in terms of his output. I don't know anything about either of these med's, but if you research them and feel comfortable, why not try them? Keep us posted as to the outcome. Good luck.
