I was wondering is anyone else had issues with hair loss or hair thinning out after having their colon taken out. Also, have you had issues with your skin in general after surgery too. I noticed my hair seemed to really thin out recently and have seen a few videos on you tube regarding this issue. I guess it is more prevalent in women than men though. As far as skin issues, I also know that some people in general who have crohn's or UC have skin issues, but after the surgery, it seems to have gotten a lot worse with me, especially since I already had issues with it prior to this surgery. Just trying to figure things out.

Since we do not have a colon or rectum, we do not absorb as much as we use too, especially since stuff runs out of us at a quicker rate than colon folks.

DEFINITELY!!!! My hair does not grow as fast as it use too unfortunately. And my hair has thinned out as well. I am also a vegetarian and that definitely does not make it any better lol. I would just say increase your protein intake and just be grateful for what you have, that helps make me feel better.

Skin issues: YES!!!! I go 14-20x a day and I wash my hands a lot because of that, I get dried skin a lot: it peels, gets red, and itchy. I try to use lotion when I can remember lol. Speaking of lotion, about to put some on now lol.

During my first surgery they gave me aquous cream for my dry hands but once my body temp rose it caused a red rash that spread all over.and I had abit of hair loss.but aquous cream and soap caused massive problems.

I now use substitute soap called dermasoft for showering or hand washing and locoid cream for any eczema type skin but I don't need that too often.I also use vaseline intensive care with the aloe vera.

Sounds like you got everything covered

As far as women are concerned, we tend to have 2 major problems that are linked to hair loss...1. our thyroid glands...if you tend to be hypothyroid you could see hair loss, exhaustion, weight gain, fuzzy thinking and a lot of other problems. If I am not wrong hyperthyroidism can also cause hair loss and weight loss...(a major trauma can throw your body into either of these along with many other problems)

2. Hormones. If you have entered pre-menopause then you could feel all of the above plus dry skin, hot flashes, sleeplessness, moodiness, and a whole lot more.

It has been a while for me but I remember that after every single long surgery (not the 10 min procedures but the 5+hour ones) my hair would fall out in clumps.

I suspected that it had something to do with the general anesthetic or the shock that the surgery put my body through or both...I never received any official medical confirmation so it is more an opinion than fact.

I can remember a girlfriend (my she be blessed) came to the hospital and washed my hair for me about 5 days post-op...I could see the horror on her face as she pulled clump after clump of hair out of the drain...I reassured her that it was normal and that it would grow back.

To reassure most of you, it did...maybe never quite as thick as before but I no longer looked like a bald eagle!

I did try to eat healthily, increase the amount of fish (salmon) and other animal proteins, and eat lots of vegetables (more common sense than medical advice)

I also massaged my scalp with my head hanging down and used cold water to rinse my hair after washing (to close the pores)...I do not know if this actually helps anything at all.....but my dermatologist suggested it and my hairdresser agreed.

When I look back at the old pictures from 2007-2010 at a time when I had had a lot of surgery I see how sparse my hair was...

If you are really worried, talk to a dermatologist.

I started using collagen powder for aches and pains...one of the side effects is I've started growing hair along my hairline.  I already have a ton of hair, but it did fill in a part that didn't have hair before.  Another great thing is I don't get the very uncomfortable feeling when I have gas.  It used to hurt when I had gas and would need to go to the bathroom or suffer in pain.

I also noticed the year before my colon was removed my fingernails looked terrible.they all had like waves of thicker and thinner nail.I looked it up and read that when your body suffers a trauma your fingernails stop growing but then restart so my body was probably going through traumas were it stopped hair and nail growth while it figured out what was going on.i think.but my nails look normal now.

I now look at my nails and tongue to judge how healthy I am.Ive started cleaning my tongue also to remove bacterial overgrowth.I notice healthy people have nice pink clean tongues😛

Agree with everything! EMily Parris had Stated too that the surgery medicine stuff the doctor gives us, can also cause hair loss as well.

Mouthwash helps me with my tongue as well.
