Hi everyone,

I’m new to this site. I’m having so much anxiety just going through the decision to do this. Our daughter is only 11 years old and had her colon removed just after her 5th birthday. Initially the plan was to wait one year, but 1 year turned into 6 years in a blink of an eye. Now as her teen years are quickly approaching, we realize that this has to be done. I’ve done a lot of research into the doctors & surgeons- all whom I believe are qualified to the job well. We finally decided to go with Dr.Khaitov from Mount Sinai, NYC. I am stuggling so much with the difference of technique - mucousectomy with hand sewn anastomoses that he will be using verses the staples as the more common technique. For those of you that have had the surgery done- please tell me your results with the technique- pros & con. For me- mucousectomy pro if not having to deal with cuffitis ( which I strongly worry about as she still has bloody mucous from her rectum to this day. con - possible sphincter weakening & continentence issues, strictures. Stapling procedure- pro is better continence, con is ongoing issues with cuffitis and potential issues with pouch. Part of me realizes that I will be struggling no matter what -mostly because she’s my baby and I don’t want anything that could possibly make her suffer & no one can give me that guarantee. Any type of reassurance you can give me is appreciated.

First of all I think your daughter won't have too many issues. I know you are the mother but she's a warrior . She's had a bag and handled such a big surgery at that age , I am sure she'll handle this one too. I went for the staples one simply because its something done more than other alternatives . Remember this a doctor may not be perfect at something but things he's been doing overtime are easier for him to handle plus he can manage complication post ops better if he has done something he's more used to. Also if in future for any reference she had to go to a different surgeon it'll make easier for him to find the cause .

I Wish All the very Best to her 👍
