since my surgery I've had a lot of trouble with gas pain &pressure. I can't pass gas normally (only if I'm in the bathroom since it's not only gas) I've tried gas-x to help relieve the pressure - I've read it doesn't get rid of the gas, but helps it all come out st one time - but it feels like the more often I take gas-x, the more trouble I have passing gas.
Anyone else notice this problem? Or have any advice for gas problems? -- I don't eat anything especially gassy, no carbonated drinks, etc...

Beano is good if you're eating veggies and whole grains. It needs to be taken at the start of the meal. Do not take it after you've eaten or between meals, as it won't be effective.

You should also start on probiotics if you haven't already. Over time they will also help with gas production and will give you a number of other gastrointestinal benefits as well. They are also indicated in helping to prevent or at least reduce the frequency and severity of pouchitis, so they're definitely a good thing to add to your regime.

There are foods that are supposed to help with gas reduction, including buttermilk, yogurt, cranberry juice (the real stuff, not the drink), peppermint and fennel seeds. I posted this in another thread recently, by my dietician had in fact recommended crushing fennel seeds, putting them into a tea ball and brewing them as a tea. And since fennel has a natural licorice flavour, you can't complain about the taste. Smiler

Products like gas-x, oval and imodium advanced, or other anti-gas products which contain simethicone, will not actually help reduce gas but are supposed to help you pass it faster or more easily. So really, they might get you through a bad spell but they're not going to help much over the long term. As others have mentioned, the key is really to try to prevent gas from starting in the first place.

thanks for your answers, it's good to know other people have noticed this problem too. how did it make your symptoms worse? it seems to make me incredibly constipated.
i'm coming up on 2 years since my take-down in august.
i stopped taking gas-x yesterday ¬iced all night i was still too bound up to use the bathroom although it felt like i needed to go, i didn't take any Imodium (since i was too bound up all night) ...well this morning i think everything went back to "normal" ...i had very bad diarrhea (which was almost welcomed after not being able to go all night) i started back on my regular Imodium regime &had a banana with breakfast - so hopefully things go back to "regular" later on today.
Sometimes when you stop a medication, it can take a few days for the effects to wear off. For instance, if I take even just a couple of imodium tablets, sometimes the effects last well into the next day. If you were taking gas-x regularly, you may not notice any real difference for several days.

Basically, you're aiming for a good balance. You certainly don't want to have diarrhea or high frequency, but you don't want to get bunged up either. Personally, I'd rather my stool not be too solid or it's more difficult to pass. Considering that you are having some difficulty evacuating, perhaps you could cut your dosage of imodium down to half for a few days and see how you do. You can then adjust your dosage up or down from there as needed. You may even find that eventually, you don't even need the imodium at all on a regular basis. And you may find that once you are less stopped up, you will also have less gas. Gas can be worsened by retaining stool or having your system work too slowly.
Things are returning back to "normal" after having stopped the gas-x about 24 hours ago. Thank god. I agree, I'd rather have loose BMs than be constipated, that tends to give me more pain (from trying too hard to go to the bathroom) & loose stools seem easier & faster to fix than being constipated (seeing as I won't take laxatives or stool softeners)
