Of the four years I've had my pouch, I had my first bad case of pouchitis start this summer sometime in early August. I noticed substantial weight loss and more frequent trips to the bathroom with minimal output. My loss of appetite is the worst, though I'm not sure if my stomach has just shrunk or if it's the pouchitis. My wedding was August 9th and I'm not sure if maybe the stress caught up to me or what. My GI had an emergency surgery the day I was supposed to go see him and he books up fast so I won't even go to see him until this Wed. I've been on Flagyl for about a week now and have seen improvement but still struggling with eating and weight gain. I'll be scheduling a scope when I see him as well which may help shed more light on the issue but if any one has any advice as to how to put on healthy weight it would be helpful. Also I have seen a lot of talk about the oregano oil, is that something I can take while on Flagyl or wait till after?

heres something you might want to consider..for my chronic pouchitis i eleminate complex carbs and sugars thus if i want to add some extra calories and because of my restrictions which include no protein powders of any kind (processed a no,no )this is my latest try

protein supplied by cartoned egg whites,i add some frozen blueberries,even half a banana if you want.little water (depends on how much egg whites i add) and for weight gain some almond butter (but must be one only made with almonds and at most sea salt)traders joes has one..and if i still need some sweetener a little sweet and low..this is only sugar substitute s.c.d. approves..add one of these to your three meals a day..i avoid all sugar except fruits for my pouchitis/s.i.b.o. issues to cut down on feeding more bad bacteria..

also or weight gain think adding good fats to your meals like avocados(high calories),i use olive oil a lot and found a good dressing italian in a store like whole foods that has no sugar added..when not adding almond butter to drink (optional) i snack on almond butter on celery or a banana..the drinks help best when you have no appetite i find..add maybe a i ounce of mild cheddar cheese..hard cheese s.c.d. approved for some more good increase in calories..eat as is with some grapes snack or add to a lettuce wrapped turkey burger..i like as a veggie some sautéed string beans with garlic and almond chips..

oregano oil might be good to look into it to see how much..i think you can take with antibiotic because you will stop antibiotic to see if oregano will work for you..one jpoucher doing it over a month now but she takes 12 drops of oregano oil with no antibiotic..

i plan to give it a go to rotate it from antibiotics because not sure at this point how long you can be on oregano oil..three months so far seems the number i hear about..

but in retrospect thinking do not try to many things at once ..i rotate antibiotics so i plan on doing oregano in this ongoing plan..
