Hi all,  new member here.  I am a new owner of a J pouch with my takedown only being 4 months old.  I was a very health person before my UC became untreatable and caused me to lose 30 pounds.  I was a very lean 165 and worked out 5 days a week before becoming ill.  I have since had 3 surgeries and now fully healed from them.  I have been back to working out and life in general for a couple of months now.  That being said I am having a hard time gaining weight due to everything going through me so fast.  My meals generally only take a couple of hours to pass.  My normal protein gives me gas and is out of the question.  Anyone have any advice for a person interested in getting back the muscle I lost from Chronic UC and 3 closely performed surgeries?

I wish I had a suggestion but am looking forward to hearing what others say.  I'm in the same boat as you...had my takedown 4 months ago and finding it very difficult to put the weight back on.  My old "go to" foods to gain weight were ice cream/protein shakes later in the evening (and other high calorie snacks) but my J-Pouch doesn't seem to like those.  Would love to add 10-15 lbs.  I also exercise regularly.  Will keep an eye out for any good ideas people send you!

Only thing I can suggest is something that gives you gas... Protein drinks.
I was using one called Raw Protein.
It put it on fast but I don't work out and it all went to my  gut.
It's not a fancy malty chocolaty one.  It's chocolate flavored but not what you would think.  Most places have samples you can try of different products.  You can give it a shot without investing in a large quantity of it.
Just a thought.
Richard.
Hello, I'm brand new here. I saw you're post and thought I'd chime in.
I had chronic uc for about 5 years till I ended up having the surgery. I have now had a j-pouch for 3 years. I too was in good shape and worked out a lot before I got to sick. I weighed about 180 at 5' 10". With all the prednisone I was on I got really bloded and weighed almost 200 before my surgery. After my first surgery with the illiostomy I dropped down to about 155 lbs within a month. It really sucked!! I was so weak. I struggled going up stairs even! After I had my pouch surgery it took awhile, maybe a month or so I started putting some weight. I jugged those premade protein shakes like crazy and took fiber powder along with Imodium to help slow it down. A few m
Months after pouch surgery I did p90x. I took in a lot of protein along with fiber. I got up to 178 after completing 3 months of p90. 3 years have past and I didn't workout much anymore, to busy with work and starting a family. Now for the past 3 weeks I've been doing the beach body body beast workout!! Intense! Consuming over 3500+ caleries a day and a lot of water I've gained four pounds so far! Mostly muscle. My goal is 190 lbs by the end of the 90 day program. I'd really like to hit 200 and be fairly lean.i do use the toilet a lot more now that I'm eating so much along with all the shakes too! I'd say at least 10 times per day. I think I'll try taking fiber powder and Imodium to slow it down. I fear that my nutrients are going through me too quick.
I hope this helps you out! Please fire away with any questions. I've had my pouch longer so I can maybe be of some help. Thanks!!

For me it took a lot of weight gaining shakes, lifting weights, and just eating.  It took me a few years to get back to where I was.  i am still a very hard gainer and I find that if i stop working out and or eating and taking supplements I immediately drop weight, FAST!  So just continue to slowly increase calories and hit the gym.  Good luck!

Hi, I work with some patients with UC and C's and was referred to this forum. In some patients, there is a struggle to gain weight, and when we tested the amino acids, either in urine or blood, we often see low to low-normal levels. This may not be the case in every patient. In any case, this patient started medical grade amino acids and stopped the powders. This may be a consideration in weight maintenance. An example of a higher quality amino acid supplement is Master Amino Pattern (MAP). There are many out there and as long as it is high quality / medical grade it should be fine.  Also using a probiotic like kefir and VSL#3 (or equivalent) may help as well.  Hope this helps!

Why I think weight/muscle gain for jpouch is difficult.

Pre Jpouch:

Lift, sleep night through, eat 5 1000 cal meals.

Post Jpouch:

Can't consume the cals and proteins as easily. Large 1000 cal meals can no longer be tolerated.  Now difficulty of 10 500 cal meals to gain same effect. And "gains". Very difficult. I'm eating all day.

Also rest pattern is changed. Can't sleep more than 5 hours straight.

I would try to eat often. Every 2-3 hours. Supplement with protein powder 1x daily. Along with nutrition drink 1x daily. And foods high in fat. Avocado. Olive oil. Fish. Nuts. The fatty foods stay with you and require a lot to burn. I also do a slow digesting casein protein before bed.

And lift oh yes get back to it. 5 days a week.

Same. I lost 20 lbs in 2 months on accident. Over working and not eating. Lost all my gains.
