I eat blueberrys every day and also raspberrys maybe three times a week, also eat pears without skin, sweet potatoes , zucchini just about every day ,  and occasionally small pieces of nuts maybe on a cake.  I have read most people with J pouch find these foods hard to eat and now sort of  worried  if I am  eating  the wrong foods .  Please let me know if these food are bad in the long run.  Thanks so much.

cant comment on sweet potatoes, i do eat potatoes, but in very small amts, never been a fan/liked sweet potatoes so avoid those. its an individual process. I find eating various sorts of nuts and( i buy  the mixed variety) tolerable. I have a diagnosis of pouchitis and irritable bowel with diarrhea and while i am still having some frequency issues and urges, the xifaxin antibiotic my gastro has me on, the 550 mg 3 x a day is helping me in the frequency dept and probaboy working on the bacteria.

zuccini should be fine steamed or gently stir fried/sauteed, dont se ean issue with steamed vegetables or grilled much, i like either/both.

my pouch is 19 since passing october 15th this year, and i dont have a proctocolectomy/total colectomy but do have a sub-total colectomy with a jpouch higher upstream at the top of the sigmoid colon/rectal area not inside the anus like most jpouchers.

im doing well, and the frequency and diarrhea dont stop me form  moving along and forward and living life.

the fruits i eat are blueberries (sometimes they come out, looking like they  are before consumption/prior to  eating, whole/pieces in the toilet water mixed with my stool, same as corn will/does.  other fruits i eat and like are an apple a day red or yellow w/ skin on and or a nectarine or peach. dont notice an increase in frequency from either of those.  i keep all those fruits in my refridgerator on a reg basis too so i have them.

i wont let a food i like stop me from consuming it, the pouch is a small part of me and i wont and dont let it run my life

best wishes

Hi KTA thank you so much for your response, just wondered do you eat fruits like pears and apples with the skin, I know most of the fiber is in the skin, but too afraid to eat it.  In addition to my j pouch I have a severe problem with my bowels ,going through PT at NYU, must take miralax and eat lots of fiber to help me eliminate.  So hope I can eventually be okay and hope NYU can make it happen.

Thank you, Stay well and God Bless, Michael

I am a 28 year j-pouch veteran.  I have found in the last 10 years that eating gluten free (and for some people dairy free) is a huge relief on my taking high powered antibiotics!  I do not have to take Cipro or anything anymore.  I am not dairy free.  To address fruits.. I find that I can tolerate them however I will know that I will have to void more when I consume them.  I put them in my Ninja blender with protein so that the seeds such as raspberries and blackberries can be broken down!  I love berries.  If a fruit is too acidic such as lemons, limes, oranges they act more like a diuretic for me and I don’t go out anywhere for a few hours after consuming.  I do not take anything like Lamotil to slow my bowels down since going gluten free!  I maybe should at times.  I have also found for me that when I have to go on antibiotics for bronchitis or some respiratory problem; I end up with anal burning and pouch dumping problems.  I cannot take prednisone in high doses so I avoid prescription medication when at all possible.  I have a list of foods that are helpful but that can vary from one individual to another.  I void 10-12 times daily which is normal for me and never have a formed stool.  I have a small j-pouch as one well known Gasteroenteroligst in North Carolina informed me.  That may be the reason!  Hope this help!!  Feel free to contact me whenever!  I have a Naturopathic doctor who has helped me as far as bowel dumping so often by prescribing a couple of supplements by the company “Standard Process”.

I definitely can not eat fruits, veggies, leafy greens or beans. I used to, about 5 years ago. But things have changed for me. From what I’ve been reading on these posts and Facebook from other jpouchers, it just depends. I just don’t know what it depends on. That’s what I’m trying to find out. Why the change for me and if there is anything I can do to change it back! I miss a good salad!!
