Hello:

Later this week, I am flying from New York metro area to Florida, so not a particularly long flight, but I am concerned about flying and how it might affect my pouch, specifically if I can expect more gas....This is something I already have a lot of issues with, and I remember during my UC days, flying always caused extra problems.
In addition, I am concerned about the exhaustion of travel in general, as I am quite anemic now and getting ready to have iron infusions (hope to get first one in before the trip). And this trip is not exactly a vacation..I am helping chaperone a high school trip.
I had asked my GI about the gas problem and travel, and he recommended that I try Xifaxan, gave me some samples. No guarantees it will help/work, he said, but worth a try. That is one of the antibiotics I took while treating severe and recurrent C. Diff. when I had a colon, and I don't think I had negative side effects, but I honestly can't remember. And especially having a history of C. Diff., I hate to take antibiotics for the heck of it...and worry about it causing other problems. I would start it a day before I left.
So I'm wondering if anyone wants to chime in about flying and effects, if any, on pouch and/or anything that helps with gas (so far I haven't found anything). Any input on Xifaxan will be appreciated as well.

Thanks so much,
Laurie

I have absolutely no problems flying. No additional gas. You might want to take Pepto Bismal and see if that helps. I've been on some very long flights - +15 hours and still do fine. Stay well-hydrated is about all you need to do.

If you don't want to take the Xifaxin, don't. But take it along with you in case you have any problems. I'd think you'll do just fine.

I have taken xifaxin chronically for many years for pouchitis. It is not absorbed or is poorly absorbed and stays in the intestines, thus systemic side effects are unlikely to happen. If any side effects at all occur, they are likely to be diarrhea or cramps.

I have recently flown from Hartford to Tampa to see my family in Florida, and also from Westchester Airport in White Plains to Nassau in the Bahamas. I had no issues. Such short trips are not really exhausting for me.
My only suggestion would be to try the xifaxin a few days before leaving. I personally have not had good luck with this antibiotic in that it gives me severe diarrhea and I would not want you to deal with adverse affects the day of flying if you were to encounter them. As for flying on the plane...it is great as there is so much noise no one can hear you in the bathroom! Walk if you can and drink extra fluids as others have recommended.
