After 13 years of leakage attributed to a 3rd degree tear during labor, I have been properly diagnosed with pouchitis.

Truthfully, I never had trouble with incontinence until the tear, but I started flagyl yesterday and within 8 hours I felt more "normal" than I've felt in the 27 years since the first onset of UC. Amazing!!!!!!

Nausea is creeping up on me, though. It's not unbearable, but certainly not pleasant. I skipped dinner tonite and meat, in general, has become very unappealing. Reminds me of when I was pregnant, lol.

So I Googled and found that ginger tea may help. We have about 200 boxes of tea, so hopefully there's some ginger in there.

Oh, and I read that probiotics help. I'm still taking on OTC and finally got the insurance decision on VSL today....declined. Still working on that.....

Any other suggestions?

Interesting, Holly. Glad you are feeling better!

I honestly felt a lot better after the first dose and feel like a million bucks today....save the nausea and still being tired. Maybe I'll try 2/day as well.

No ginger tea in the house, so for tonite it's ginger ale. I can get away with carbonation with some brands, so I'll go with it until I can get some tea.

On a side note, I skipped the CVS and Dunkin Donuts drive thrus today! I went inside. That's huge for me. No leaking or pressure when I walk. YAY!!!
Also, just like with being pregnant, best not to skip meals if you have nausea with Flagyl, as the empty stomach can make it worse. Basically, just your stomach acid churning around in there and giving you grief. Best to go with small, frequent meals that are not terribly adventurous. If you can avoid adding more drugs to the mix, the better, but if you are overwhelmed or vomiting, you have to treat it.

And yes, definitely dose related. My doc has always prescribed the lowest dose, 250mg, and it works great. It is prescribed 3 times a day for 10 days, and can repeat another 10 days if needed. Like you Kia, within hours of the first dose, it was like turning back the clock. I didn't even know how good my function could be. I now just have a standing order, and have it filled when needed. Plus, I never travel more than a day or two without bringing it along. You do not want to be caught in a strange land without proper treatment, especially when you are more likely to be exposed to new strains of bacteria!

Try not to make yourself crazy about the VSL#3, as it is not even guaranteed to work. It just has the most studies done. Plus, it is mostly for maintenance once you are in remission.
