For about a week now I've been off of my immodium because of how much constipation I was experiencing, never fully emptying the pouch. Now I'm going around the clock, of course. I've been taking metamucil to thicken things up so there hasn't really been any diarrhea, just tons of stools that come out every hour or two. I wish I could stop eating so I could stop pooping altogether, because not only do I have the elusive "butt burn" but I have some kind of crazy gas or something because when I empty I'm pushing the stool out and then my rectum spasms and it feels like gas shooting out of me and burning me on the way out. I reapply either calmoseptine or A & D ointment after every trip but inevitably I'm back there in an hour and the previous application is rendered fruitless. Also I'm curious if anyone has a good tip for an effective antacid, I've tried prilosec, protonix, prevacid, all the otc stuff (zantac, tums, etc.), aciphex, and nexium. The last one has worked pretty well post take-down. Aciphex worked great when I had my colon but I haven't taken it since and a lot of pills effect me differently now. I can't get anything to slow me down or reduce my heartburn or abdominal pain effectively since surgery. Just looking for some relief here. I'm over two years post-op shouldn't I be better yet?!!

Hi Kesley,

Are you getting 'explosive' gas since you came of the immodium?

The reason I ask is that I've been getting the feeling which is terrible! Not only is it upsetting the butt burn but the loudness of expelling the gas it somewhat embarrassing. I dread to think how I'll deal with this when I get back to work (had my final op for jpouch about 4 weeks ago).

I'm sorry to hear its been two years and you're still having difficulties. Its nice to know that we can talk on forums like this.

How have you been since you posted the message? Did you get you're issues resolved or did you got back on the immodium?

Odhran
Ask your doc about Tincture of Opium for the frequency. I too can't take Immodium because it constipates me and sucks all the moisture out of my body. The Opium is much more gentle on my system and I have used it for 8 years now. It is, however, very expensive so good insurance is a must.

For the BB, ask about Questran. It is a semi gross tasting powder you mix just like Metamaucil. It binds to the acids in your stool which make the stool not burn as it is passed. It provides relief so things can heal. That will probably help with the pain on expelling gas too as you are probably really sore. You can't take other meds at the same time (I think you wait a few hours) because it will bind them and you won't get their benefit.

Hope things get better.
