Hey gang - Im coming off my first bout of pouchitis. Finally done with the Cipro (which really made me feel like shit) - and Im doing the pro-biotic thing and resting a lot. But my level of exhaustion seems insane. Im having to take a nap each day and every few hours Im yawning like I havent slept in a week. I assume this is all part of not absorbing nutrients and combating dehydration but just wanted to check in with others to see if it also took them a while to bounce back or should I be concerned there may be something else going on. thanks - A

Not really sure what the cause is...I sometimes think that it is the infection itself that causes the exhaustion...your body it fighting it off and thus it is using all of its energy to fight the good fight. Yes, dehydration  is exhausting so please keep your fluids up (and your electrolytes).

I know a lot of people who swear by juicing...which may not be a bad idea for those of us who cannot eat raw veggies...but can drink them. I can't do a lot of fiber so yes, veggie juices can be very helpful in getting my energy back.

I have found any mix of carrot juice or pomegranate with some greens thrown in help me to up my energy. I also like blueberry juice or any dark berries and dark green veggies.

Nut butters are full of energy and so  are spreads like Tehina (sesame paste)...add to an avocado salad with a few pieces of grapefruit for a real punch.

Do not forget to breathe. Deep breathing seems to help oxygenate the blood and gives you some extra energy. A long walk interspersed with jumping on the spot (rope jumping with or without a rope) for a few seconds gets the heart pumping and does wonders for your energy level too.

Sleeping makes you tired (anti-intuitive, I know!) and so does doing nothing so even if you do not have the time or energy to go for a long walk, jump up and down for 1 minute  every hour to get your heart beating...it will also help you to sleep better at night.

Hope that some of this helps

Can anyone recommend any literature or recipe book for patients with Jpouches ...for juicing or better yet something a little thicker so it tastes like a milkshake. I miss my veggies soooo much ... and my nuts and berries and etc. etc. etc. and just the CRUNCH of a carrot dipped in peanut butter... sorry guys... just had to vent! I have the opposit problem ... I cannot keep wait on! I'm 97 lbs. and eat peanut butter chocolate etc. just to keep some weight on.

But living with 4th stage colon cancer I'm just sooo very thankful to be here and have the most incredible husband (my bestie) wonderful grown kids and wonderful FRIENDS! I'm at Hopkins and some great news last Monday... my cancer hasn't grown but if and when it does I will be doing Immunotherapy... not chemo!!! My cancer... we found out after receiving chemo at a different hospital... is chemo resistant. This is not curable but IT IS TREATABLE!  My doctor and the entire staff at Hopkins is ABSOLUTELY my Angels on earth!! Ok ... night all ... pleasant dreams and may all of you get a good night SLEEP!❤️❤️

Alison you may want to look into the Cipro side effects. this exhaustion may be a symptom of what many call ' floxed'. Look up the term flouroquinolone toxicity or the term 'floxed'. This drug can affect the central nervous system as well as the more well known neuropathies and other side effects. It is not the safe drug we might assume on the basis of how easily it's handed out.
