Hi, my daughter recently underwent j-pouch surgery second stage and has a loop ileostomy for now until the take down surgery in a few weeks. She’s having lots of discharge from her bottom that can be quite smelly, the dr says it’s normal but should it be so much? It’s every day quite a bit like a yellowish liquid.

her former terminal iluem (her jpouch) is producing copious amounts of mucas, which her body is trying to expel.
during the 13 weeks of my loop, btw surgeries I experienced this, and found it quite unnerving.
don’t worry about it and sending lots of good thoughts for final her final surgery/takedown.
Thank you so much for your reply I was having a bit of a panic. Will the leaking be like this once she’s had the take down too?
The leakage should stop after take down. She’ll have an adjustment period, of course, and patience is recommended.
If I remember correctly, after my takedown and recovery of my pelvic floor I no longer had any leakage.
again, this is not something to worry about at this point.
I understood the post that way, that the stoma itself "leakes" into the pouch branch, creating discharge there. That can always happen with a loop ileostomy.
There can also be mucus from the inactive part of the bowel and pouch as well as bacterial residue in the output. I wouldn't worry about that if it was meant that way.
I asked my surgeon about that very possibility during my loop time.
he told me that the unused branch was stapled shut and tucked into the abdomen, so it was impossible for stool to enter into it.
Thank you for all the advice, she has had some actual poo too a couple of times, they told me that could happen but I was much more worried about the leaking every day, I’m glad to hear it doesn’t continue.
