Hello,

Its been awhile since I have been on here but I am wondering if anyone has severe back pain from muscle separation in abdomen. My core is so weak and I know surgery is not my best option but my back pain is so severe that I am considering it. I’ve gone through physical therapy and it helps a little then the pain comes back. It is causing bowel incontinence. I am so worried. I just don’t know what to do. I think the surgery is very invasive. Like 14 hours and my skin could die while they have me open. Any advise would be so appreciated.

Hi, @Gayla - I’m sorry you’re going through this. Back pain can be complicated, depending on the cause. Have you had a proper evaluation (including an MRI) by a well-recommended neurosurgeon? I wouldn’t usually expect bowel incontinence from abdominal muscle issues, but spinal cord or nerve compression can cause some serious issues. When my back problem affected muscle strength in my leg I knew it was time to do something. I was fortunate that although my spinal cord compression was severe I was able to have spinal disk surgery without needing a spinal fusion. In my case the surgery was straightforward and the recovery was complete.

Thank you for the responses. I am wondering if I should have the surgery to fix the Diastasis Recti since it is causing so much trouble. I have several hernias but was waiting until surgery was my only option to get them repaired. Anyone with any experience with this would be so helpful. The other part of me says I do not need another surgery unless it’s life or death.  I’m just so tired of dealing with my back and I know it’s because of my weak core due to damaged muscles in my abdominal wall.  I exercise but it doesn’t seem to help. Thanks in advance.

Your welcome! Maybe seeing a pain specialist might help?
