Did anybody have covid -19 here and had a bad effect on the jpouch like increased BmS or pouchitis. Or only had gastrointestinal symptoms ?
I am taking precautions as I have asthma regarding social distancing and wearing mask. I have not been to a restaurant for dinner but get take out and heat everything up before I eat either in the oven or pots and pans just to be sure . But it is getting boring now and I am wondering if I can eliminate the step of reheating everything .what are you guys doing with regards to outside food ?

I have asthma too! What do you take??? I take Advair 500/50, Montelukast 10mg, and albuterol for nebulizers and inhalers.

I take Allegra and albuterol as it is mainly allergic asthma And avoid triggers as much as I can ..i wear a mask while cleaning and have a highest rating hepa filter for hvac. I also inhale steam sometimes .

I think you should take Montelukast 10mg too, its a pill that helps prevent asthma attacks. Not many people know about it so I try to get it out there as much as possible, its for allergies too. I have been taking it for almost 10 years and its great.

There doesn’t seem to be any evidence of foodborne transmission of COVID-19. I’m being extremely careful overall, and I won’t go into a restaurant (indoors) to pick up food, but I’m not trying to sterilize it once I get it home from curbside pickup. I do wipe down most groceries, even though it’s probably unnecessary, because the number of people who may have been in contact with them seems larger than with takeout. The chief risks seem to be indoor spaces, especially with unmasked people.

ok thank you For letting me know... I will bring it up with my pulmonologist . Did you any side effects while on it ?

No problem! I try to get that info out there to every Asthma family member

And no not at all! It works wonders! You take one pill every evening and it works beautifully! It use to be free at Publix Pharmacy but they cut that out unfortunately, but its definitely affordable!

Have you ever done Corticosteroids for your asthma in the past, or is allegra pretty good for you?

Thank you . Good to know your routine.Yes agreed that indoor spaces and air droplets is the main transmission.

i am hoping I gather the courage with feedback and answers to stop reheating Everything .

Thats really thoughtful of you !  I have had serious side effects from steroids while treating UC so I requested My doc to not give me steroids  for asthma. I am new and recently diagnosed so still figuring it out.

Thank-you! I appreciate that! Thank-you for being so nice! I always love it when people are nice

And yeah, i do not blame you for that! I would probably do the same thing as you if I had serious side effects too. We have been through enough lol. At least with the Montelukast, that will give you more asthma protection; and its NOT a steroid too, so you should definitely be fine  I am not sure if you use a nebulizer too, but that works way better than an inhaler- it takes a long time but its worth it!

If you do not mind me asking, what side effects did you have in the past???

I have not used nebulizer yet. Will definitely consider Montelukast .

yes ofcourse ! I was given steroids when ever I was in flare initially.  my UC became steroid dependent so whenever I would taper and go below 5 mg my UC symptoms would come back. So was on them on and off for 10 years. That caused severe osteoporosis and avascular necrosis in my right hip , left knee , left wrist , left ankle and right knee. Now have bulging disc in neck and my right wrist is heading to the same fate 😐.

i had to do hip and knee replacements and have joint pain due to avn .i regret taking steroids looking back but didn't know any better

I had Covid, caught it from my boyfriend.  He got it much worse than I did.  I was worried because I'm the one with an underlying medical condition...although not having a colon didn't seem to be one to worry about.  My boyfriend actually got way more gastro issues than I did.  I was nauseous, but that's about it.  That being said, I didn't eat much so that helped.

I would ask the doctor to prescribe a nebulizer, a nebulizer has been proven to help more than inhalers; although a lot of doctors disagree with that but its definitely true. And great! Make an appointment with your pulmo asap and ask him to prescribe a nebulizer with albuterol for it and Monetlukast 10mg

And omg!!!! Steroids did a lot on you!!! That must have been a crazy hard time for you! I am sorry! Do you take calcium pills for your osteoprosis??? And do not blame yourself! You did not know, that is perfectly understandable. Sometimes the docs do not tell us everything unfortunately. I got my J-pouch at 22 and a couple days after surgery, I I found out that J-pouchers have a 50% infertility rate. I was like, "how come no one told me this?" Lol. Some doctors do not tell you everything lol.

There is no scientific evidence that Covid 19 is any different than any other bacteria or virus that is killed by the normal cooking process, so reheating and re-cooking the food does not accomplish anything, except perhaps to dry the food out and give you an artificial peace of mind. You also do not need to bleach the food, although that is exactly what Food Lion did to keep their chicken looking and smelling fresh some years ago before getting caught doing it.

That being said, I had the somewhat nightmarish experience of recently flying one way to Florida to collect my father, his car, and dog and some personal stuff and relocate him to CT.  This trip was very concerning because there was literally zero social distancing on my flights (to Philadelphia and then Tampa) and I even saw one lady wearing a HazMat suit (have no idea where she bought it but can't say I blame her based on what I saw). Air travel should be avoided at all costs unless it's an emergency like I had.  Fortunately I came back and my father and I have both tested negative twice since getting back to CT.

On the drive back to CT, we took it slow and hoteled in South Carolina and Maryland overnight, at hotels hand picked by my father from his previous trips mainly because he overvalues good free hotel breakfasts, as people in their 80s tend to do when you get something for nothing.  Unfortunately, however, the hotels we stopped at, which were a Best Western and a La Quinta, have stopped doing breakfasts free or otherwise, thereby emotionally devastating my father. Ended up having to do takeout from the Waffle House and takeout waffles are usually soggy, and ours were.  It is what it is sometimes.

I should add that in August my girlfriend and I traveled to Portland, Maine and stayed at a Hyatt there that was doing a free breakfast, but not open buffet style.  All sandwiches were pre-cooked and pre-wrapped, plus yogurts and other pre packaged and pre wrapped foods in coolers.  There was no directions on what to do with the coffee, so I decided to serve myself, and that caused the hotel staff to freak out on me because they were supposed to serve the coffee.  But there was no sign stating as much and I helped myself.  Anyway don't expect much at hotels, no room service until you check out, no towels or toilet paper or even a peek at your room by the maids until you check out.

ok Thank you ! good to know that our bodies and jpouch can handle it . I kinda have lost trust in my body due to tons of health issies and side effects and intolerances 😐.

Glad you both are ok and recovered from covid

Great!!!

And dang! Sorry to hear that! And yeah, I 100% agree with you!!! Doing my own research by myself has helped me a lot. For example, I asked a Gastro is it healthy if I pursue a 6 pack and he said yeah that is fine. I looked it up and I can actually get a hernia, blockage, and other things if I try to pursue one. I talked to people on here that have tried to achieve 6 packs and they got hernias, blockages, and bowel twists trying to reach that goal. A lot of people do not realize but we J-pouchers and ostomates are more fragile than colon folks. It is weird how much stuff you can find on your own rather than relying on a doctor to tell you everything. But things like that push me to do my own study and research, just like you do now, which is awesome!!!

Thank you for sharing your experience .

with regards to take out food I was worried of contamination after the food is cooked like if the cook / server coughs or sneezes .

so thought reheating food at high temperatures might help . Not sure though . Yes its true It made me feel safe physiologically  😀

I would love to go and stay at a hotel just for a change . I will be happy if the maids and room serivce does not bother me 😂

Really ? I never knew that !! You learn something new everyday  ! 😊

Yeah, a lot of people do not agree or they try to shut down what I say regarding that but its medical facts. Talked to many people that happened too. For exercise: I just dance, ride my bike, or run; but I mainly like dancing. Do not do anything extensive though for long periods a time, that can cause problems too. I try to stay between 30minutes- 1hr.
