I've had a Total Colectomy with a j pouch in Dec. 2012. I had to go to the GI today for Constipation. I have been totally bound up since Sunday. I have not had a movement, gas, bowel sounds, nausea, abdominal pain and distention. He told me I was not obstructed but he feels I may have colonic inertia in my small intestines like I did with my large intestines. He did my bloodwork including my thyroid and told me to do magnesium citrate and if nothing happens then call on Monday and I would get a CT scan. I did the Mag. Citrate and I got some movement but then it just stopped. This happened when I problems with my large intestines as well. The laxatives will clear me out but bind me back up.

I am currently battling iron deficient anemia and my bloodwork from two weeks ago showed some elevated LFT's and LHD (Lactate Dehydronase Enzyme).

Has anyone had this experience before (constipation in the small intestines after surgery)? If it's colonic inertia, how do they remedy this if I only have small intestines?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Most of us here had colectomy for IBD or cancer, so we did not have your issue. It sounds like your entire GI tract is affected with this motility disorder. There are few drugs available for stimulating the gut, and most of them have not so great side effects when used long term. I suppose you have been seeing an expert in GI motility disorders? If not, I think that is your best bet.
