Cipro and flagyl, yuck!

OMG, cipro and flagyl are hard drugs to be on with really uncomfortable side effects. I am being treated for dx'd pouchitis and ileitis and now I am nauseated, dizzy, have no appetite, a persistent headache, and my joints and body are aching too. Plus, I am so fatigued. My doc said I could drop the flagyl and finish out with cipro alone, or else, gut it out with the cocktail. I have been on both for over a week and have about 5 days left. I don't think I can cope with the flagyl any longer. I hope if I stop taking it that I will not greatly compromise the healing of the inflammation in my gut.

I have read the aggrieved posts that so many of you have contributed about having a similar experience with cipro and flagyl. It has helped me greatly to know I am not alone and am not going crazy. I extend kudos to all of you who have had to deal with multiple rounds/years of these drugs. It seems to me that the treatment for pouchitis is kind of a torture. Right when you need relief.....BAMM, there is something else to deal with.

Savannah: I am lucky as hell I tolerate them although I have wondered about the effect of the long term use of antibiotics on my liver. When asked this question my GI said, "you are the Guinea Pig." The Guinea Pig is still doing OK. I really believe rotation onto xifaxin to allow my body to breathe has been critical. I actually only take cipro and flagyl one week of the month. The other week would be xifaxin and then two off weeks. I seem to be able to get away with the regimen of one week on antibiotics and one week off. Everyone is different but this regimen has been feasible for me, when combined with a careful low carb diet.

However I have taken cipro and flagyl continuously at high dosages for 6 months with no side effects at all except development of yeast infections and warts in legpit areas. These proved to be severe and required months of treatment.

Thank you Rebecca, that is good to know. I hope I won't need these drugs again but with my luck I probably will. The flagyl is really starting to make me sick so another drug as an alternative might be a godsend down the road. For now, my doc says it's OK to go off and continue 5more days with the cipro. That drug is also difficult for me but less debilitating then the nausea with the flagyl.

I am another one who cannot stand and cannot tolerate flagyl. OMG, i find it just horrible. A horrible metallic taste in my mouth and the nausea makes it worse than the condition it is trying to treat. I use only cipro (although I haven't needed any for a while now). Hope cipro alone will work for you also.

Thank you techwrench and CJB. I have taken my last dose of flagyl and hope to feel better soon on the cipro alone. Thanks also for the warning on the sun. My kids and grandkids are coming for a visit tomorrow and I don't want to be lying on the couch feeling nauseated. At this point I can't even tell if the c-f cocktail has had a healing effect on my inflammation as the flagyl side effects have taken center stage in the misery domain. Blah!!
