Hello, first time poster here.  J-pouch surgery appears to be one of the only remaining options for my UC.  I have not responded to any of the treatments I've tried: Lialda, Remicade, Tibetan herbal medicine, restrictive diets, and most recently Xeljanz.

I live in San Francisco, and my GI is Dr. Uma Mahadevan at UCSF.  Naturally, she referred me to the UCSF colorectal surgeon for a consultation (Dr. Emily Finlayson).  UCSF has a strong reputation, but I don't know about this particular surgeon's level of experience with j-pouch surgeries (although I plan to ask her at our consult).

I am curious if I should explore other surgeons in the area before making a final decision, and if so, what are some good resources for finding/rating surgeons who specialize in the j-pouch procedure?

@Burning Brian , I have read about Dr Varma (mostly good reviews) although I wonder if she is no longer at UCSF - it sounds like Dr. Finlayson would be the one to do my surgery.

So far I have been happy with my experience with Dr. Mahadevan and UCSF, though I haven't met with the surgeon yet.  My consult with Dr. Finlayson is next week.  I know everyone has a different experience with this whole process.

Did you feel like your post-surgery issues were due to incompetence on the part of the doctors/surgeons, or was it more of an issue with bedside manner, etc.?  Just curious.
