I also had a problem with red meat in the beginning.  I really should try it again but I am like you I don't want the pain but than again I can eat other foods that bothered me also in the beginning.  I should  try it again in small amounts.  I also had a problem chicken breasts but not chicken cutlets or dark meat of the chicken.  like someone else said  you really have to make sure you CHEW well.   Grace

I don't eat much meat these days (and virtually no red meat at all anymore), but after my surgery, I noticed beef in particular always gave me increased frequency - not watery stools just a lot of stool, if that makes sense, as well as increased butt burn. But it wasn't terrible, more like a mild annoyance.  I've never really eaten much meat anyway, so it could just be that my system wasn't quite used to it.

BTW, my choice to limit meat in my diet actually has nothing to do with the pouch. Just a personal preference.

I don't think it's always been like this? Things were always messed up with 13+ years of active UC, so it's hard to say. But for whatever reason it seems the last couple times I tried beef it was uncomfortable inside and on its way out. I'll have to do some experimentation with types, fat content, etc. Maybe it's just me and not the j-pouch specifically.
