hey guys,

So I have a new issue and I’m kinda worried. It’s been 8 weeks since my jpouch formation- I currently have a loop ileostomy. I regularly pass whitish mucus from the jpouch which I know is normal but starting yesterday I noticed the mucus is a little blood tinged. I’ve seen some teeny tiny “pieces” of blood if that makes sense? I’m freaking out! Why would this be happening? I have my pouchoscopy in a few days and if all is well then I can get on the schedule for my last surgery. I’m obviously gonna tell my surgeon about this but any ideas? I was really hoping all would be normal on my scope 😢

thanks in advance!

Could it be something you ate? The first time I ate raspberries I saw red later on and I was shocked, until I remembered the raspberries. Same with blueberries (comes out BLUE!), or tomato skin, and especially when I eat beets. Maybe keep a simple food diary to track your output.

Thanks for your reply! I have a loop ileostomy right now so all my output goes there. I’ve only had mucus come from the jpouch. What was in the mucus definitely looked like a little blood. Not much. It was very light colored. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t any food that bypassed the ileostomy, but I could be wrong? I didn’t eat any rough fruit or anything. A food diary is a good idea tho!

When I had the external bag, I was eating lots of well cooked spinach. Not all of it went into the loop ileostomy into the external bag. Some of it bypassed it altogether and came out through the (not yet connected) j pouch and came out like stool. My surgeon said this was possible. I guess if the food is slippery or very soft, as my spinach was, it will think it should come out like poop. I took it as a good sign that my new j pouch was ready and willing, and all that was left was the reversal. I hope it's the same for you.
