Hi everybody,
I recently had my take down surgery and was doing great for the first few weeks. But now i have been experiencing blood in my stool sporadically. I feel pretty good otherwise but had a cbc and my hemoglobin is quite low..ugh
I have an appointment with my surgeon again but i feel super discouraged now Frowner i am really scared and sooo tired of all this crap (no pun) i almost died from the uc and now i feel like, o great, here we go again....is this the beginning of pouchitis and if so, can it be managed?? any advice and/or encouragement would be greatly appreciated, thnx

It could be a problem too. Cuffitis can cause blood, the staples used in attaching your j-pouch to your rectal stump could be causing irritation as well. Many of us have low blood counts and/or anemic after these surgeries. Especially since you were so ill before the operation.

There are other problems that can cause the bleeding and I think Pouchitis doesn't cause bleeding, but not sure.

Please let us know how you are doing.
The First step of the two step surgery was performed on 20th Sept 2012. I have a temporary ileostomy but I am also passing stool through anus. The problem is that I notice blood in the stool that I pass through anus. This is a regular feature. The final surgery will be on 18th Dec. 2012. What does it mean? Pouch has not been stapled properly? or something else?

Many thanks for this reply.

Kindly note that the amount of blood is very small. No big drops; just a few streaks of fresh blood mixed with stool.

My surgeon says nothing to worry about, because "Pouchogram" study is quite normal.

Is it possible that there is some problem which has escaped the pouchogram study?

Is there any other test to find out what's going on? Or I should go with the doctor's view that small streaks of blood should not be cause of worry.
I would make an appt with the surgeon who can look at your cuff in the office. I know passing mucous is common with temp ostomy but I don't like the sound of passing blood. I would want an answer to this issue before you proceed with takedown. As others have said... this may not be uncommon so soon after surgery but in my experience blood always equates to cuff inflammation.
