Hi everyone. I rarely post because, luckily, I have a j-pouch that functions very well. But, I had something happen just a little while ago. When I went to the bathroom, I passed A LOT of blood from my j-pouch. It is fresh blood, with some clotting. It looked like very heavy menstrual bleeding (it wasn't, I checked). I've had a little pain over the weekend and a bit of trouble passing stools, but nothing too bad or too uncomfortable. I'm not in any pain now and had no trouble passing the blood or clots. Has anyone ever had this? I'm going to keep a close eye on it. Thanks for any advice. My j-pouch is 5 years old, btw.

I have had this from time to time; in fact just last week I had soreness and bright red blood. I suspect it was possibly a hemorrhoid. But a few times I have passed what seemed to be a large amount of bright red blood -- and then nothing. Once it was right after a run, another time it just seemed to happen spontaneously. Both times it was isolated and didn't recur. I had mentioned this it my surgeon before, and he basically said "hemorrhoids/irritation." He wasn't concerned if it wasn't ongoing. There are a lot of blood vessels close to the surface of the pouch that can be easily irritated. You could also have a fissure, which might explain some of your discomfort.

You mention you had some trouble passing stools. You might have a slight stricture and if you were straining, that may have caused the problem. Definitely keep an eye on it, but if it recurs give your doc a call.
