Wondering if anyone else has had issues with certain artificial sweeteners resulting in urgency and incontinence?

Over the past year, I lost 90 lbs using a program that had pre-packaged food.  Of course they were sugar free, and relied heavily on artificial sweeteners.  I developed frequent (almost constant) urgency and terrible incontinence.

My GI told me that I had to stop using all sweeteners -- sucralose was the major culprit.  But, anything  using sugar alcohols (i.e. xylitol, malitol, etc.), and others (fructose, dextrose, etc.).  The only sweetener I can use is Aspartame (thank goodness -- I can still drink Diet Coke!!).

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?  And, also maybe shed some light if anyone else is experiencing these symptoms while eating "sugar free" foods.

Lclassen, I posted about my experiences with this recently.  According to the fodmap diet xylitol etc is a polyol.  I like to work backwards a little, so I looked for other foods high in polyolys and found they also upset me.  I avoided polyolys and saw a real improvement.

If you have real concerns you should probally try the FODMAP diet properly.. you can get apps on your phone (I use a free android one) which is really useful, you can apply filters to remove the types of foods you want to avoid (mine is set to remove all polyolys)

The really good news is that is not hard to avoid polyolys.. peaches, avocado, sweetcorn, sweeteners are the things I miss most, but I can do without them.

If you give up sweetener, please try to moderate your intake of sugar too. That has its own issues . The RDA for sugar is 35g, which is fine if you eat normally and don't do fizzy drinks or confectionary.

Hope that helps
