My SIBO responded nicely to a few months of doxycycline.

Hello again! I am currently trying to get proper treatment for my sibo and I am struggling big time. There are many antibiotics that could work, but most of them are only prescribed for 7-14 days. How did you doctor decide to put you on doxycycline for 3 months, that sounds like a really long time? And did your sibo go away permanently?

I have tried rifaximin, bactrim and flagyl, but with no luck. I will soom try 14 days of Augmentin, so I really hope that is my magic bullet.

Thank you!

I don’t know hw my GI decided that 3 months of therapy was appropriate - it was simply his first recommendation. SIBO isn’t very well understood, I think, and it can vary a lot, too, so there may well be different schools of thought about how best to treat it.

Very interesting. Thank you!
Did you have to treat it again at some point or are you still sibo free?

While being treated for recurring UTI, I was on  bactrim for two months.

during that time frame, we were trying to get xifaxin approved by insurance, without success. Then, my SIBO was cured right along side my UTI.

my GI was not suprised, given his treatment choices are xifaxin, doxycycline, and bactrim.

The SIBO has not returned and it’s a year later.

This is super useful, thank you so much!

How did this doctor decide those antibiotics where your options, did he run a stool test for suceptibility or was it just because those normally are used and sort of go by trial and error?

I am really surprised how long courses people are on antibiotics. Here in scandianavia doctors are super strict, so for UTI they normally are like 5-14 days. SIBO is normally 14 days, from what I read that is normal protocol, all though some seem to do better with longer protocols.

Fredz,

it all sort of happened as a coincidence.

my GI tried to get me 14 days of xifaxin without success.

because of the uti situation I was prescribed bactrim by the urologist. But  the uti kept returning, and I requested a low dose for a month to knock it out. I kind of lost focus on the SIBO.

when both were cured at the same time, I told my GI what transpired.  He told me what his treatment choices in the order I stated above, and was not surprised that it cured me.

doctors here are also cautious about long courses of antibiotics, but Uti  situation required a longer course. To his credit, the Uro warned me of potential side effects of extended abx use, and urged me to take probiotics during this time.

Great that it resolved itself from the antibiotics!

i tried rifaximin, bactrim and flagyl, but no luck. I hope augmemtin will be the one that makes me better. Thank you!

Have you tried doxycycline. Scott F achieved good results with it.

the one time I tried augmentin post emergency takedown #2, it put me in such jpouch distress, I had to abandon it as a therapy and never to be taken again.

I wish you the best. SIBO is awful and the sooner you rid yourself of it, the better.

I have not tried it, maybe that’s next if Augmentin fail. The reason I am being put on Augmemtin is due to hydrogen sulfide sibo, so I don’t only react to high foodmap foods but also to beef meat and sulfur foods. So Augmentin is supposed to be good for that. I guess everyone reacts differently and what works is all dependent on what bacteria is overgrowing. Don’t think it’s one antibiotic for all, but good to know I have options. I read many on the fb who do well on Augmentin so that’s good at least.

Having been just diagnosed with SIBO, this is a super useful post, thank you.

Very happy to hear that! I have tried many things for my sibo ( all though my health issues probably are complex and have other root causes as well), but I am going to give Augmentin a go. Please come back here and leave a comment if you find anything that works for you, I am sure this will not be the last time  someone with a jpouch could use this info!
