After my last annual EGD, my GI found a small adenoma at the ampula. At a consultation yesterday with my GI, he discussed the possible need for endoscopic removal of the adenoma with stent placement during my next EGD in January. Have any of you been through this? What can I expect? Thanks for any advice you may have!

I haven't personally been thru it, though know a few who have. Basically they will use an ERCP to try and remove it......hopefully they can, sometimes due to location and such, they are unsuccesful. But, from what I gather the area will be sore for a bit.....but you should be ok.

I hope someone who has direct personal experience can come in and share with you.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Jason, I had one of those suckers removed by scope about 12 years ago. Fortunately, I was referred to a GI who does this procedure, and he did it on an OP basis. Shortly after returning home, I developed pancreatitis and was admitted to the hospital and put on a morphine drip for pain control and nothing by mouth for 6 days. The condition cleared up completely and my ampula had been OK ever since. I had no stent placed, but then this procedure was not common at that time. My suggestion is to be sure the doctor who does your procedure has done a number of them. Be sure to have regular scopings of the duodenum (at least annually). Best of luck with your procedure!

Thanks, Bill. My GI mentioned the likelihood of pancreatitis, and may keep me overnight for observation. He's going to do the regular scope, but will have the surgeon with him to make the call for surgery (then the surgeon will take over). My GI assured me that the surgeon has a lot of experience with this operation. I had pancreatitis after my first surgery and it wasn't fun, so I really hope I don't get it again!
So, I went to UAB yesterday for the flex sig, double balloon EGD, EUS, & ERCP. However, when they did the EUS they discovered that the adenoma was much more diffuse than they thought, so they did not remove it. Afterwards, they told me that they need to discuss my options with my GI surgeon (who did all my other surgeries). I was told that the adenoma would either be removed with the ampula and part of the duodenum (resection) in one open operation, or in several endoscopic procedures. They want to weigh the benefits & risks of each, but, obviously I'd prefer the latter. Any advice?
