Just wondering about the use of Ambien or other sleep aids with a Jpouch. I'm scheduled for step-1 of what I'm hoping is a 2-step jpouch surgery in August. I get up a lot overnight to use the bathroom.. and Iuse ambien from time to time to help me stay asleep or get back to sleep easier. Without it, I get up 3-6 times a night.. with it, I get up maybe once or twice. I've never had an accident using it.. although my GI said that was a possibility.

Does anyone here use it or other sleep aids to help them get through the night?

Ambien is highly addictive and should be used sparingly.  In my case it was effective in helping me sleep, but it would also induce strange nocturnal behaviors, including sleepwalking.  I would often wake up the next day and find things half eaten in the refrigerator, things I did not remember eating (I live alone and nobody else could have eaten them).  My doctor has stopped prescribing all sleep aids.

So now I take cetirizine HCL which is available in any pharmacy over the counter.  It works pretty well and I am able to sleep for long stretches while using it.

I use temazapan as needed.  I had a problem with ambien with my j-pouch.  I needed to use the restroom more at night than before I had the surgeries.  I would fall asleep on the toilet and had a bad fall from it.  I woke up when my head hit the tile floor.  If you don't have a problem with it now I don't see how it would be different.  Hopefully you won't need to get up as often but in the beginning you will be going to the restroom more often than with a trained j-pouch.
