Hi all,

I have a history of UC and had a total colectomy with J pouch in 2004.  Did ok for the first 6 years but have had a significant number of bowel obstructions these past 5.  My most recent one occurred 3 weeks ago which led to adhesion removal surgery 2 weeks ago.  I've been home for about 5 days, starting to introduce more foods (mostly liquid-y things like yogurt/icecream/soup- but have also tried some crackers/bread), and the past two days have had a ton of gas/discomfort.  When I eat, I get uncomfortably full and gassy, just like I did prior to surgery.  Any one else gone through this or have any advice?  I have contacted my surgeon but am looking for some support as well, as I've had just about enough of feeling this way.

I would tend to think this is due to you being swollen inside, slowing things down and contributing to increased gas, and not new adhesions forming (although that is not impossible). I'd back off of the carbs and focus more on tender chicken, broths, that sort of thing. If you are sensitive to dairy, it may even be too soon for yogurt, even though it is usually well tolerated.

I've had that surgery as well. It took a while for things to settle down. Hang in there. I still on occasion get blockages but nothing like before where I was constantly in and out of the hospital.

One of the things that helps me is a heating pad. It helps to relax the intestines and keep things moving.

Also, r I walking?

Hope this helps

Thank you both for your responses.  I heard back from my surgeon and she said this was to be expected as well.  I think I let my anxiety get the best of me yesterday.  I guess I'm just concerned as to why I felt better last week than I do this week.  I am going to try cutting out dairy (because that's basically all I was eating) and lessen the sugar as well to see if that helps with the gas.

Allykat, I discovered the miracle of the heating pad last night...it does seem to help some.  And although I am trying to walk, I'm so nauseous and uncomfortable that I'd rather just lay in bed.  How long did this last for you?  Every other hour I have myself convinced that something went wrong with surgery and I have to go to the ER.  Luckily my husband is keeping somewhat calm...

Hi Jill,

I am 7 weeks out from laporoscopy for some pouch realted problems and for adhesions that were strangulating a loop of bowel and fusing it to the wall.

For the 1st couple of weeks post op I spent a lot of time on the sofa, eating soft foods and cramping.

Over the last couple of weeks I have had some sharp pains at the site, an almost blocked feeling and discomfort...all probably due to swelling and things settling down.

Although I get an adrenalin rush of panic for a couple of seconds I realise that it is just transitory and will pass quickly.

I agree with Jan that the best diet is usually chicken/fish, broth, soups etc and that yoghurt and milk products cause gas and discomfort. I avoided carbs like bread products because they seem to encourage cramps and gas (or is it just me?).

Walking helps, so does heat and hot baths if you can.

Don't stay in the same sport for too long either.

Too soon for massage but rubbing gently doesn't hurt.

Hang in there

Sharon

I do have a lot of different ginger products too...candied ginger and ginger in vinager (like for sushi) that I eat with rice.

It helps my k pouch to function properly (keeps things flowing and reduces the gas/cramping). Right now I am eating tons of 'hot' foods like Indian curries...no idea why but I crave rice and curry (very weird for me) but my gut appoves the mixture.

Keep up the fluid intake, it helps with the swelling and healing.

ps. Alley, yes, surgery again..7 weeks out and things are hurting in very strange ways...am terrified to have another contrast study...but may just be things swelling/unswelling and I am feeling it everywhere. Time heals all

Thank you all so much for your replies.  It makes me feel like I'm not in this alone.  These are great suggestions...I cut out milk today and had some ginger tea.  I felt better than I did yesterday so I guess I really do just need to take it one day at a time.  Any suggestions for non-dairy soft foods?  My husband found dairy free chocolate ensure which actually tastes pretty good and some dairy free icecream/yogurt.  I've got soups too.
