I am a 61 year old male. Since being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 1997, I had a J-Pouch procedure in 2014. During the last several months, I started having more than my "norm" joint pain and gas/bloating.  As time went by, I also have experienced random abdominal pains. The abdominal pains/discomfort comes and goes, and on average covers the majority of the belly, involving roughly 60% on the left side and 40% on the right. I believe that standing or walking sometimes hinders the pain to some degree. Having said that, my discomfort is both random and sporadic. I also have random "looser" bowel movements than I'm used to having or when it's semi-firm, the stool is very narrow. I've read a lot about others suffering from Pouchitis, Bacteria overgrowth, ..etc. I'm not sure what to make of my new symptoms! I haven't really changed my diet that much, I don't drink alcohol and I live a fairly healthy life. The only meds I take are (Fish Oil, Multi Vitamin, D3). The only real  flaw I have is that I sometimes a little eat more than I should have at the dinner table when it comes to having a J-Pouch. So now I'm reaching out to all my fellow J-Pouchers to gather both your personal experiences and opinions regarding my so new symptoms.

Thanks for your help,

Charlie

From my understanding of the abdomen and the J pouch;  abdomen pains and discomfort will be within the small intestine as the J pouch is much lower and deeper within the pelvis; that's how it was explained to me.

Abdomen and muscle pains could be a sign of dehydration or maybe a low potassium level, either by not consuming the correct foods or failing to absorb potassium from your diet.

I went to my general physician today regarding said issues. Since my surgeon is 6 1/2 hours away ( Cleveland Clinic), I will call him and see what his thoughts are and go from there. I’ve heard of SIBO. What do you know about it? It’s my understand that it’s a bacterial overgrown of the small intestines. I’m not sure if it would produce my painful abdomen symptoms. It kept me up all night!

PS: As I’m messaging you, my X-ray results just came back “normal.” This is so puzzling!

Thanks again!
