Hi everybody! I wanted to make a post for anybody worried about takedown. I know every case is different but I too was very concerned with takedown and how things would be after, etc. I had the 2 step surgery. My takedown was 10 weeks after the first surgery. I have indeterminate colitis and had a rough go with the first surgery. An ileus. Terrible tailbone pain and an awful time with my ostomy bag (although it did get better towards the end). Anyways, I just had my takedown 5 days ago. I got home yesterday so I was in the hospital only 3 days! The pain was sooo much less than the first surgery. I was up and around the day of surgery. Had my first bm at the 24 hour mark and was eating food the night of my surgery...I was very cautious as I was terrified I was going to get an ileus but it didn’t happen! I made sure to walk a lot and I found I was able to get around soo well. Most of my discomfort was from bloating and trapped gas/air. I started passing stool before gas which was a little concerning but by the second postop day, the gas was passing too! Now I am home and doing well! I’m probably having around 12 stools a day so far which I know is normal. They are pretty watery but not painful and not really that inconvenient. The bms are quick so that’s good. I’m drinking a lot of fluids and trying to thicken my stools with food so that I can put off the Imodium a little longer as I’m a little nervous about adding that too soon. I’m using some paste for my butt and ordering a bidet. Last night I slept great! Slept a full 8 hours and did not need to have a bm. No nighttime accidents either. So anyways, that’s where I’m at right now! Hopeful things will stay on track and improve weekly but also trying to remember that things can be up and down, so will be ready to take on whatever comes my way next!

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Hi KH, glad to hear you’re doing well.  I am 3 years out and doing well also.  I remember I went out about a week after I got home from the hospital for dinner.  My surgeon said to plan to be close to home for the first 2 weeks.  Since takedown I have had a pretty normal life.  I bike, hike and work part time in a job that requires traveling.  Best toilets are in Dunkin and Starbucks.  I do find Lomotil helps a lot, especially if I’m on a 5 hour hike or a 20 mile bike ride.  I usually only take it at night and the days I work and for traveling.   The only other thing I do is Benefiber.  So far, no real complaints.  Hope you continue to do well.

Thank you so much! Wow, it sounds like you are doing great! I’m very happy for you 😊 I can’t wait to get out and do more! Thanks for the tips as well, those are always helpful. I’ll keep everyone posted as time goes along. Hope you have a great day!

My surgeon told me to start walking after both my surgeries (four and a half years now) and that is the best advice I have received. I watch my diet, drink plenty of water, have Hydralyte in the hot weather or when I’m feeling over tired and I keep fit by walking every night.  Also it’s important to have a positive attitude. All the best KH I’m so glad that it is going well for you. Regards Francesca 🌷

So excited for you! Hope all goes well! 😊 I hated the loop too...my bag seemed full all the time! I had some anal pain too during time with the ostomy. Doctor said it was normal tho.

I omitted to say in my previous reply which is really important for my well being. I try to stick closely to a gluten free diet. When I do this I’m at my best. !!👍😀

That’s great! I’ve considered that too 😀 I know I don’t have an allergy to it but I’ve heard how well people feel when they go gluten free.

Awesome, good for you. I’m hoping to have my takedown next month I’ll pray for the same experience as you lol

Thank you!!! I hope everything goes well for you too! ❤️ I’m 3 weeks post op now and still doing well! Stools have decreased and are thicker. Butt burn has gone way down. I’m out running errands and pretty much back to “normal” as far as doing my daily routine and whatnot. I do have a fissure but it’s not really too bad. I have a paste for it. I’m also back to a regular diet! Still being careful and chewing very well. Excited for when my lifting restriction is done and then I’d love to start working out again, slowly of course! But anyways, I’m happy for u that you’ll be having you’re surgery soon! Keep us posted!

Ya thanks I’m excited. I had the 3 step process. It’s been a year now since my first surgery and I has my jpouch created in March. I’ve been working out and getting I shape but got a hernia at the stoma site so I’m reduced to walking which I usually get 70-120 km done In a week. Any tips on things I should bring to the hospital with me? I have a good idea but maybe something you wouldn’t have thought of before your takedown. I had my pitch test last Tuesday so just waiting on the results which I’m sure will be fine.
