I have a hernia where my stoma used to be.  My surgeon and my gastro think I should leave it alone but it is getting bigger, plus it is unsightly!  The surgeon, Dr Fleshner, is good at what he does.  He is going to insert a mesh.  However, my last surgery entailed removing painful scar tissue that was causing ascites, in which he also inserted a mesh.

I worry about the formation of new scar tissue which might necessitate a follow up surgery if it is painful or causes ascites again.  It felt like broken glass was moving through my stomach.  The pain was off the charts.

Has anyone had successful hernia repair, or does anyone have a cautionary tale to share?  This is the first surgery that makes me nervous!  Thank you.

I developed an incisional hernia at my ostomy site a few months after takedown of my my pouch redo. It was not very large but I know these tend to get bigger so I had a general surgeon repair it with mesh a few months later. It was an open surgery but it was called an onlay repair, the mesh is ontop of the muscle so the didn't have to go too far under to disturb anything. so far so good, but I  am thin so I can feel the edges of the mesh still which is weird. lol. My GI Dr Shen was a little upset I had it done with mesh though, he feels anyone with an autoimmune disease should not put foreign materials inside them.. I felt this was the best solution and most chance for success.

Thanks, Poucho!

Dr Shen was also my GI for awhile!  Did he offer an alternative to the mesh?  So far, I don't feel the other mesh but maybe it's deeper.  I'm also on the thinner side, and my friend who had a hernia repair says he can feel his mesh, too.

He did not offer any suggestions to an alternative. But he was a little pissed I had mesh put in. Dr Shen doesn't think anyone with a pouch should lift anything over 20-25 lbs either..lol. that is unrealistic in the normal world. I love him to death but some things he is a bit out of touch with every day living

He said the same regarding not lifting more than 20lbs.  Maybe it was 25.  Can't remember but he would have freaked if he knew I used to leg press 350!

I had it done with laparoscopy..5 years ago.  Took a week off work to wait for the gas swelling of your belly to go down.  Now, I have zero scars and zero issues.  I'm not sure where my incisional hernia was located, but after surgery, the told me I had 3 hernias.

Probably because my 1st surgery was emergency slice and dice by a general surgeon.

Now you already have many good advices here. Hernia isn't curable per se by medication, you can ofcourse prevent it from happening or if its there you can inhibit it from growing any further. The only sure cure is a surgery. My friend had one while working out , its been 2 years his pain has almost reduced to none and its size also shrunk to nothing. He took a lot of precaution as in workout belts and applying warm pads everyday and does it till this date. He was advised to get operated but he chose not to and cure it by any means he could and somehow did it.
