Hello, I am a 54 year old woman with a J-pouch from March 2000.  Over the last 19 years, I have had limited problems.  A few cases of pouchitis, a hernia on my surgical scar and an anal abscess that lead to a fissure.  All of those things have been dealt with over the years with no real complications.  And believe me, I understand that I am blessed.

However, now, I have been experiencing symptoms that my doctor thought was just pouchitis but when it didn't clear up, he ordered a CT and saw nothing unusual.  After I stopped the antibiotics, the symptoms returned.  He scoped again and took biopsies (waiting on results).  He is talking about it possibly being crohns/colitis in my small intestines, as the inflammation he saw was above my pouch.  He said my pouch looked good.

So, along with all of this, I have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids a few years ago.  Because I was having no symptoms and I have had multiple surgeries, my gyno said we will just let them be and see how it goes.  That was in 2012.  In the last 6 months or so, I have been feeling pressure on my bladder like I have to pee all of the time.  I've never had children but I'm told that's what being pregnant feels like...lol   Anyway, I suspected my fibroids had grown.  After visiting the gyno again, she confirmed that they have grown.  Apparently, they measure them by the size of your uterus and mine is "18 weeks."  I guess that means that I have a 4 1/2 month sized uterus of fibroids.

Okay, so my colorectal surgeon mentioned that the fibroids may be adding to my gastrointestinal issues.  Has anyone else had uterine fibroids and it cause gastrointestinal issues?  I was just going to handle the fibroids AFTER I got my gut issues resolved, but the colorectal surgeon mentioned that I should go ahead and get that remedied now.

I was planning to have the embolism procedure, where they inject something into the artery that cuts off the blood supply to the fibroids, so they die off, instead of the hysterectomy, since I already have had so much abdominal surgery.

Any thoughts/feedback/information/encouragement would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lori

Hi Lori. I don't have a lot of helpful information but thought I'd offer some shared support. I have 3 fibroids and have had a pile of GI issues that no one seems to be able to figure out including horrible chronic pelvic pain. I have endometriosis but it is under control, so I keep asking my gyno if the fibroids could be the cause of the pain/GI issues and he keeps saying no but I wonder.....If I were you, I'd get them out if they are willing to do it and it is a simple procedure. At least then you know they aren't the problem anymore.
