I'm on ferritin infusions again once a week for another 4 weeks, B12 shots every 10 days, and 5000 D3 each day. My question I guess is, how many infusions do you usually get and how long does it seem to last. I have no large intestine ( colon) and only a bit of small intestine so most oral vitamins are useless to me. I'm just exhausted all the time and short of breath and want to get it under control. Any help would be appreciated.

It all depends on your body and if you are losing blood on a regular basis.

I am a post-menopausal woman (with no colon, a k pouch that has been redone too often to mention and a shorter gut)  so I am keeping my iron levels up quite well now.

At 30 or 40 it was much more difficult.

I take my iron by mouth but bite into the pill for better absorption (if not it comes out whole) and always drink orange juice with it or it will not fix.

But I lose a lot of blood through my stoma so if I stop I am almost immediately tired again (within a month or 2) and by the third or fourth month I am a dishrag.

Back in 1999/2000, I was so tired that I could barely make it up the stairs to my apartment from the subway (about 4 stories)...I would stop and cry at each landing, sometimes sit at the top and sob...it made no sense, I was very active, walked miles daily, ate well...took supplements by the gallon...

It took a while but we finally figured out that the iron levels were not the problem, it was an infection that was slowly brewing in my body and sapping all of my energy...once we found it and fixed it everything was fine.

I was told oral vitamins would not do anything do to not having a colon. This doesn't seem to be the case for many of you. B12 was low so my Dr. Started me on B12 injections, ferritin was low so now I'm on I.V. infusions. So oral vitamins work despite having no colon ? I do have infections ( pouchititis) and have blood from pouch each intibation but not a lot. I've had cancer three times, 22 surgeries scar tissue, adhesions and severe nerve damage due to all this and sepsis. I'm on pain management. I'm nearly 60 and pretty much just a naturally happy person but the exhaustion is overwhelming. Thanks for answering.

As far as I know, most of what we absorb is absorbed in the upper G.I tract: from the mouth to the end of the small intestine...B vitamins are absorbed sublingually... most others through the small bowel...if you have had the distal ileum removed then you would have problems absorbing the B's through normal food intake...For the rest...only your doctor and your blood work can tell you what works for you.

My ilium was used to create my k-pouch. I was told all k pouches were. What is yours created from if you don't mind me asking.  I was told ferritin and B12 was absorbed in the colon. My liver is now having issues with fatty tissue and I've gained 45 pounds in 4 months and my hair is falling out. I was told this is because of the iron. I'm so confused right now. Thank you Sharon ❤️. I need to have a sit down with my doctor's again with this information. Thanks, Ric

Yes! For years I was so tired all the time. I had K-Pouch 30+ years and now BCIR. Anyway a doctor put me on Nascabol nasal spray once a week and prescription strength vitamin D and it changed my life. Before that I slept til noon, took a two hour nap and went to bed before nine. After starting Nascabol I started getting up before 8:00 a.m., no nap, and staying up til 10:00. I felt like a teenager again. I still do only now I’m stuck in bed by 2:00 in the afternoon because I’m in so much pain, never the less, the Nascabol is a B complex that will do the job because it doesn’t need to go through our limited digestive track.
