Just curious if anyone has used EGCg (Green tea extract) for pouchitis.  I have been battling pouchitis since my surgery.  I get put on cipro and flagyl and I'll feel fine for a week or two and then get pouchitis again.  It's a vicious cycle.  I went to the doctor the other day and he told me to take EGCg and in 2 weeks if there's no improvement then I go back on cipro. I was wondering if there's anyone out there that has tried this and did it work?

This treatment was recommended to me by Dr. Shen although I haven't taken it long enough to discuss its effectiveness.

Sounds like a small group of 9 patients tried this therapy to come off of antibiotics. 7 reported improvements.  5 reported that they no longer needed antibiotics. 2 reported no benefit.

I'm also curious if anybody else has tried this therapy.

Dr. Shen recently recommended EGCg 400 mg to me - he said he is a fan of it (NOW brand - see link below). Dr. Shen said that there are some studies out there where some patients have shown an improvement in their pouchitis after taking EGCg.

I am weening myself off Xifaxan, which I have taken for 10+ years, and will give this a shot.  I am still taking sulfasalazine and canasa.

I had a telemedicine session with him two weeks ago, so I am now set up as a patient of his at Columbia. I am planning to schedule a scope in NYC later this year when things return to normal, or some semblance of it. I was planning to change to a new doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, especially since I live in Ohio, but then figured staying under Dr. Shen’s care is worth any inconvenience of traveling to NYC.

Hi!  Just curious how it worked out with the green tea extract.  How much did you take?  Do you still take it?  Thanks!
