My nephew just had step 1 surgery where he got his ostomy bag. He had surgery on Tuesday and went home Sunday. He was very sick before the surgery and lost 20 pounds. I can see he is getting better everyday but he is so sore and weak. It is difficult for him to walk for long periods of time, get up off the couch or out of bed, etc. Any recommendations for how he can build up his strength quicker and ideas for how long the abdomen soreness will last?

Patience. Don't expect too much too soon. If he was sick for a month preop, it will take a month or more to recover. Remember, he is recovering from both a serious illness AND major surgery. This takes much longer than coronary bypass surgery. The pain should get better with each passing day.

So, the idea is to walk within tolerance. Rest when needed. Plenty of fluids. Eat what appeals to him. He will improve with time. You cannot rush it.
