I had my colon removed last year. I had my 2nd surgery last thursday and my takedown will be in nov or dec. How long should i expect to be down from work from this surgery? My surgeon says 4 to 6 weeks. I have a management job. Lots of walking but no lifting. Im hoping to be back at it in 3 weeks. Have any of you been back to work in less than a month?

I went back to work too soon after my takedown and struggled with exhaustion.  It wasn't just the surgical recovery, but learning to deal with the new j pouch and being up  a lot at night.   I was able to work from home, and should have stayed there for at least two more weeks, but I felt pressured to go in .  Now we've been working from home for 6 months, go figure.

Someone posted a question like this a few weeks back- you might want to search for it...

it depends on the type of opening you had and how they close it- If it’s an open wound and they pack it or if they just suture or staple it. If they suture or staple, you could be back pretty early on if you feel up to it and you have access to a restroom.

Also there is pain management to think about and if the wound is open or if you had an infection, you might have pain wearing pants- if that’s where the incision sit hits your pants. All of these things are stuff you won’t really know until you start to recover.

I work at a University (in an office setting where I can step out to go to the restroom when necessary) and I was back in 4 weeks after my takedown. I knew that I had the option to go part time if I went back that first week and it was too difficult for me or my energy level was too low. I kept that in my back pocket so-to-speak. I also had a to-go bag that I took to the bathroom with me and a change of clothes in case I had an accident, etc. It helped to be prepared but I didn’t think I did have any accidents that I can remember (it was a three years ago).  My 4 weeks is a little early to go back, and I think you’ll hear from others that they took longer.
