I had a true one-stage procedure (I never had an ileostomy). Yours sounds like a two-stage procedure, which is more commonly done. The surgeon warned me that it doesn’t tend to reduce overall hospital days, but since I was an airplane ride away from the hospital I considered it well worth avoiding an extra surgery. I did have a miserable post-op ileus that lasted 10 days, but that can happen even with more surgical stages. I’m glad I did it that way, but there is a greater chance of leaking at the anastomosis if the new pouch is placed into service immediately.
