It is used to drain fluids after surgery. Mine had a thin tube with a type of bulb at the end of it. The nurse would empty it periodically. I had it for two of my surgeries. It is not pleasant when they remove it.

Oh wow, I am sorry to hear that, glad you are better. What causes fluid to build up like that?
