Hi All,

I am curious to know if anyone has been blessed with the diagnosis of Celiac Disease on top of UC? I have had my j-pouch since 1997 and have struggled with a variety of issues over the years (too many to write in this post). Last summer I was having frequency problems when my GI suggested a Celiac panel. Needless to say I was shocked to find out that I tested positive and an endoscopy confirmed the diagnosis. I am looking for people who may be in the same situation as me. It is a constant struggle to find foods that don't cause some type of problems for me. Also, I seem to have a heightened sensitivity to dairy as well. Unfortunately, I don't see a tremendous change after adopting a gluten free diet. I would just love to hear from others who may be in a similar situation.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Celiac a few months ago, although I've been on a Gluten Free diet for the past 7 years. I've been living colon free for 34yrs,  I find that if I eat fresh foods I'm ok, its when I incorporate any processed foods into my diet that I have issues. Like you, I also have issues with dairy.

Like I've told my doctor, I only seem to feel better when I don't eat.

Hi Library Lil. I was initially diagnosed with coeliac Disease nearly 30 years ago. It seemed to progress to UC. I continued to stay on gluten free diet. This January 2015 I had my large bowel removed and in May started using my J-Pouche.  I'm still on my gluten free diet which I have
adjusted to over the years. Not sure which is normal and what is not now. Needless to say I am not having any probs with j-pouche. But I continue to basically stay on gluten free diet which is making me feel really good. I've read somewhere that a gluten free diet can contribute to fewer probs with a j- pouche. All the best.
I forgot to mention I mainly eat vegetables, meat, fresh foods and limited processed foods. Gluten free bread biscuits etc. Lots of cheese. I'm not Lactose Free. Lots of rice cakes and fruit. Needless to say I don't miss food with gluten in it. Sometimes I cheat but it always seems to catch up with me and give me problems. However I need to say that I am still adjusting to the J-pouche but with very few problems so far. Cheers.

Thanks for the responses. I guess it is good to know there a few people out there like me. I guess I am starting to feel like when I don't eat, I feel better too. It makes me sad because I LOVE to eat.   I have difficulty processing roughage- like fresh veggies and fruit, so I have been making smoothies to help with eating right and getting the nutrients that I need. I will see my GI soon and hopefully get some relief.
