Hi All,

I have been experiencing watery stools for about a week now. I don't mean loose, watery stools like a "normal" (person w/ a colon) person's diarrhea. I mean they are more water than anything else. My stool reminds me of what comes out after you empty an enema into yourself. I'm so sorry for being so graphic-I think this is the only place in the world that I would actually type these things!!!! That's exactly what it looks like though. I'm eating normally, like I typically do. I have no pain, no fever, no discomfort and no loss of control. I don't think it's a blockage because there's no pain anywhere and I feel like I'm emptying completely. It's very odd. The oddest part for me is that I'm having no urgency to go despite the fact that when I do go, it's water. I'm holding off making an appt w/ my doc because I'm thinking I may have a stomach bug. My kids were sick last week w/ the coxsackie (sp?) virus. What do you folks think??

I've been very lucky w/ my pouch. It typically works beautifully. I've only had 1 mild bout of pouchitis in 4 1/2 years and it didn't feel like this. Could this also be pouchitis??

Thanks for your advice.

If it's not causing you any inconvenience then it might be simplest just to watch it. Perhaps it will go away as mysteriously as it arrived. You may not be absorbing as much water, so it would be worthwhile to pay attention to your hydration.

If you prefer to do something, you might see a useful change with Metamucil, Benefiber, Konsyl, or Citrucel.
The same thing happened to me today. I have only had my pouch since early June but usually do well controlling things (frequency and consistency)with Imodium and Psyllium fibre. Suddenly it is all water despite the meds. Unlike you I have a very mild abdominal discomfort a very low-grade nausea and mild chills (no fever) and like you, there is no great urgency nor incontinence but I am needing to go about every two hours.

I also am wondering about a flu bug of some sort. Is pouchitis common at this stage of the game? I was under the impression that pouchitis became a risk after year(s) of having a pouch.
Sudden watery stool could be something you ate (this happens to me if I drink coffee or have prune juice, for instance), or it could be a stomach virus. Pouchitis usually does not present with acute symptoms, and usually there are other symptoms besides watery stool. I agree with Scott - keep an eye on it. If it doesn't improve within a few days, it would be fine to give your doctor a ring. And yes, do pay attention to your hydration. You may want to try imodium, or if you suspect a virus, going on the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) might be helpful in getting you back into a normal rhythm.

Kathy, in your case this definitely sounds like a stomach virus, especially with the sudden onset, fever and chills. I had norovirus a few years ago that came on the exact same way - I was fine, then I had sudden watery stool and within an hour, chills and low grade fever. I was better within about 3 days. Give it a couple of days - if you are not feeling better, then I would call your doctor. One thing, though, you will have to pay attention to your hydration. Make sure you drink, and not just water - I find coconut water to be very helpful in such situations, as it is high in potassium.
