I recently got the blissful new that I'm pregnant Smiler While I'm thrilled to pieces, I'm flipping out about how long I've been on flagyl and pregnant. I've got chronic pouchitis and have been rotating antibiotics since takdown - Flagyl, clindamycin and xifaxin. I was flaring badly right before I conceived so went back to flagyl because it always works and have been on it for 6 weeks. I know there's nothing to do about it now, but going forward, what other drugs could I take for pouchitis? Can I go back on steroids? I've switched to clindamycin which is safe but it doesn't work for very long. My clinic is closed so I'm going to call on Monday about this, but I'm trying hard not to freak out and need some reassurance...

I also suffered from chronic pouchitis when I was pregnant with my son. Before becoming pregnant I was on cipro and flagyl. My Dr. had me stop taking the cipro, but I continued on a low dose of flagyl throughout my entire pregnancy. It did not cause any problems whatsoever. My pregnancy went smoothly and my son is healthy. That was 6 years ago. At times I wondered if the pouchitis would ever go away. Amazingly, after several years of being on antibiotics it finally went away completely and I have not had any pouchitis (or other problems) during the past 4 or 5 years... Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.
Congratulations!!!! Great news :-)

I know this was a concern for you awhile back. I'm pretty sure you are allergic to Augmentin and Penicillin, right? The good news is, once you are 14 weeks, you can stay on Flagyl. Also, they are doing studies trying to prove that Flagyl is safe prior to 14 weeks so don't be too worried (it's approved in Europe I think). Xifaxan is Category C I believe so I don't think that will be a good option for you. Steroids are Category C as well...concerns for cleft pallet or something like that. What about trying sulfa drugs or going back to a UC med like Asacol? They won't treat the bacteria, but may help with the inflammation from the bacteria. Just a thought.

It's only a few more weeks until you can be back on the Flagyl. Hope you find something that can help you until then. On a great note...your digestion is going to slow down a ton during the first few weeks. I had to stop taking my antibiotics and immodium, because I was only going once a day. This might buy you the time you need!

Best of luck...it'll be ok!! It's better now to have this issue than at the end when there is a ton of baby pressure.

PM me anytime. I survived chronic pouchitis during pregnancy and have an amazingly healthy little boy. You will too (or maybe a girl :-)).
Congratulations!!! So pleased for you! How far along are you?

I am 19 weeks now and been fighting nasty pouchitis the whole time. In have been told I can take Cipro if needed. Right now I am on Augmentin, rotating with Keflex and Ampicilin. Struggled at first to gain weight at all but have put on weight (8 lbs. almost) and so far things are good and baby looks good despite the cocktail of drugs I was/am on. Fingers crossed for you Smiler!

Very exciting!
Hooray! Congratulations!

I had to hold out on the Flagyl until about 12.5 weeks of pregnancy, then I was on 250 mg 1-2-3x a day off and on for the second and third trimesters. My baby girl is already 4 and healthy and wonderful.

My doctors preferred Flagyl to Cipro, which also worked for me at times. I never took any of the others you mentioned.

God is able!
blessings,
Laura
Clicky-I am about 9wks along right now Smiler over the past few weeks, I've been able to talk with a few mfm doctors who have all expressed to me that the current feeling on flagyl even in the 1st trimester has changed a bit. They basically told me not to worry and to continue to rotate flagyl and clindamycin because flairing would pose a greater risk than the theoretical risks of using flagyl. I am so so so relieved! Aaaand thrilled that we got pregnant "on our own"! Now I'm just ready to hear this little guys heartbeat! Sigh....
Hi Armywife,

So so excited for you Smiler!

I cried the first time that I saw my wee boy on ultrasound and heard his heartbeat! Now I am 21 weeks I can feel him kick (although with my unbelievable noisy and busy gut - its sometimes hard to tell the difference. Each of the ultrasound techs comment on how loud my gut is - poor wee baby!)

I am so pleased you have a good regime approved - I was so relieved when I got on top of my drugs and things were planned out!

Enjoy - and I hope that you are feeling well!
