Has anyone experienced a partial bowel obstruction,  most likely caused by adhesions? Here's my story. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have not been able to eat anything solid for 2 weeks without excruciating waves of abdominal pain. After a few hours of this, the pain passes and I have a large bowel movement. Too avoid a complete obstruction I just stuck to liquids. Well after 2 weeks of that diet I became extremely dehydrated and have been in the hospital for 5 days now. They did an xray that showed no complete obstruction but signs of a partial. They do not want to do any other tests while pregnant,  so are trying to keep me hydrated for the next 3 weeks, and then we will deliver at 36 weeks. I can still not eat anything except liquids,  and that's even very minimal as well. My abdomen constantly hurts and feels as if it's full of air even without food. I know this would be 10 times worse if I did eat. I guess I just want to see if anyone else has been through this and what there docs did. I know my case is a little different considering I'm pregnant,  but anything at this point helps.

Sandy,

Yes and yes...

I have had partial bowel obstructions caused by adhesions that emprisioned a loop of bowel (kind of turned it into a U shape)...anytime that I ate too much roughage or something pasty (carbs like white bread or potatoes) I would start to feel the blocking...then I would feel like a horse kicked me in the gut and everything would stop...Couldn't even take a pill without throwing it right back up along with the sip of water and bile. (full blown blockage)

In my case they usually lasted about 24hrs...I couldn't take anything (other than a shot) and had to ride it out by walking, gently bouncing or rolling around on a pilates ball.

I ended up having laproscopic surgery in Dec to release it along with a few other adhesions that were bugging me.

Things are better now but I still get the 'feeling' and twinges of blockage and pain at the same sites. I think that once you have adhesions in a spot they tend to come back (not sure at all if this is a feeling or a fact)...

Whenever I had a partial blockage fluids were the way to go. Full blockages meant 0 tollerance for food or fluids.

I sincerly hope that you get through this with the least amount of trauma possible for both you and the baby...hang in there, watch some funny movies and enjoy as much as possible these last weeks of pregnancy...

Sharon

So glad you're in the hospital and hope they're keeping you not only hydrated but nourished!

I'm in a holding place of what seems like obstruction...CAT scan shows no thickening and there's no way to confirm adhesions, but expect they're there with 4 surgeries. I have your very symptoms in cycles of time. If I eat the wrong thing and take welchol for bile mal absorption, I go into a phase that seems like an obstruction. Cramping, pain, and nausea that takes my breath away....I lie in bed panting like someone giving birth. I cannot throw up, I cannot relieve the pressure.

So far, I have been able get through it...like you...not eating, not drinking.. it seems to pass after a day or so  just sending out clear fluid at first and finally an onslaught of poop.

My heart goes out to you dealing this while carrying your baby.

I have a demanding job and life and struggle to get through my week while managing some sort of reasonable digestible diet:

Clean protein, fruit and veg juices...that's about it. I do take liquid vitamins.

Again, praying for you and hoping others will chime in with their experiences that helped them hang on to their j-pouch.

Thank you for sharing Your experiences with me. It looks like my uterus is compressing my pouch, thus preventing solids to flow through. They weren't able to look at the small intestine further up, do to the amount of radiation, so there could be an obstruction further up. At this point they are putting me on TPN until I deliver and hoping everything gets better after that!

I am 15 weeks and  4 days pregnant and have been admitted to the ERywicefor partial obstructions.that cause severe pain nausea vomiting. It has take 24-48 hours to pass.Once it passes I have a sore tender stomach.I hope this does not continue.I am trying to eat more bland but prior to pregancy I never had any issues with obstructions.I hope I can make it through this pregancy with out any more issues

Im going through the same thing right now, except the being pregnant part. I've only been able to get pregnant once and didn't even know I was pregnant till after I miscarried. I've had horrible adhesions since my takedown 12 years ago and horrible periods since an ovary removal a few years ago. So I just thought the horrible pain and bleeding was a combo of the both. But I woke up this morning with that same pain. Can't stand up strait at all, super nauses for weeks, headaches which I never get. Im currently laying on the couch with my best friend: my heating pad. Waiting for the pain to pass. Unfortunately everytime I go to the ER or my GI feeling like this with fear of obstructions they just say its not a full obstruction and theres nothing we can do. Sounds like your in a good place with helpful docs. Good luck and congratulations!!
