I had a high contrast CT today and the pain afterwards was terrible. The CT people had me call the my gi's office. GI was gone. His medical assistant told me to go the er if I wanted morphine. Otherwise go home and take oxycodone. I am home but I do not understand.I have had plenty of pain free cT scans. Why did this one hurt the whole abdominal area?

Are you talking about a CT Enterography? It is not clear to me exactly what procedure is under discussion. If it is a CT Enterography you drink volumen and the only pain that happens is when they inject the contrast, which burns going into the veins, and can cause an unsettling feeling for 5-10 seconds. Abdominal pain does not usually occur unless the volumen caused some reaction but unlikely.
Boy, I've probably had 8-10 CTs and never had abdominal pain with them. Even when I had a huge presacral abscess and a fever of 105! i have had the warm flush during the IV contrast injection.

Are you still in pain? If so, this is not right and I'd worry about a reaction to the IV contrast, or even a mesenteric blood clot... Frowner

You should get into the doc if this is still hurting. It is very unusual. I have had well over 20 CT scans with and without IV contrast, also CT enterographs where you drink the nasty stuff.. and I have never had additional post CT abdominal pain.

Even if it is tolerable, you would want to know for the future if you get reactions to the IV contrast or to the stuff you drink. (don't know what kind of CT you had)
It was a high contrast abdominal ct with three bottles of the barium drink. This is the same amount they gave my son who still has a large colon. Is it possible that it was just too much liquid for my intestines to handle? The worst pain was where my colon was terminated.

I had very bad chills with teeth chattering for about 12 hours and then a fever for five hours. My son lost our thermometer so I do not know how high the fever was. After the fever broke I slept all day and woke up this evening without any pain. This is the first time I have had no pain in three months.

It seems so bizarre.
So you had the iv contrAst? Right?
Seems like you you might have had a reaction to the contrast. You need to speak to your doctor about this so you know for the future.

Also sometimes for me that barium junk you drink seems to clean out the gut, gets things moving, resolves partial obstructions. Wonder if maybe that is why you feel better?
