I was wondering if having soft water would make a difference in the wear time of my wafer! I was getting at least 4 days wear time and we turned our water softener up! After my shower, before i get out, I use the yellow liquid dial soap and wash Wendy (ileostomy) real well and rinse off. Do my regular routine to apply my wafer and lately only been getting 2 days, could the soft water be the reason why! Any simular experiences? Any replies or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks so much! Wanetta

Could be.  I have hard well water and I can tell it's all cleaned off.  Feels kinda tacky when I'm done.  But I still use adhesive wipes and then the wipes that make a barrier between my skin and the wafer.

With the aid water I can certainly tell everything is off except for a little adhesive left from the old one.  But I can see where the soft water would cause a problem.

Richard.

I always try to figure out what's different when I notice skin/adhesion/bag changes. For instance, I've realized my wear time has shortened in warmer weather because I sweat more and also since I've started teaching pool classes and getting everything wet in chlorinated water. If you turned your water softener up and you immediately noticed an effect with most everything else being stable, there's probably a direct correlation. I second Richard's suggestion. You need a tackier skin surface for your appliance to stick to. I use skin prep spray, too.

I use adhesive remover wipes by Coloplast.  They act as a barrier too but you can use a spray along with it.  I do sometimes.  Safe and Simple I just received so  cannot comment on it.  Ask your supplier.  They should have it.  I have tried a barrier wipe called Cavilon.  It is a wipe barrier instead of a spray.  Works pretty good.  They also have a spray.  But as Lambie said you must be completely clean and dry.  I take a Q tip to wipe around my stoma just before I put the wafer on.  As you know the whole thing weeps continually and if the wafer hole is tight it will take the weep and put it below the wafer when you put it on.  If that makes any sense.

Cavilon makes a good product.  So far I like it.

Grandma, I order my supplies from Byram Healthcare, so I order directly from their catalog. That's where I saw this spray. There's not much difference between wipes and spray, but I bought the spray for a change. I thought the application process might be faster. Some people find they're sensitive to some brands. I've used Cavilon, too.

My insurance, Medicare, doesn't pay for sprays only wipes. I've had Cavilon wipes and I purchase their pump spray from Amazon. It works much better than wipes and is quick to dry with a bit of manual fanning. If you want to use stoma powder it is much better to spray this on over it. Dabbing with the wipe gets messy. You can get aresol sprays for a lot more $ and they aren't better, IMO.

Hope it helps.

That's good info!

Hi there I know this is late reply but I was having the same problem. I found if I showered with wafer off I would get skin problems every time, any kind of soap is not good as it leaves a film on skin and therefore creates problems with adhesion. Now I always just change my appliance after my shower.  Also I use the adapt stoma powder then 3m cavilion barrier no sting spray making sure it's completely dry before. Another great product is the eakin seals slims they are amazing! I have not had a leak since I started using them and even if your wafer is peeling a bit the eakin seal stays on until you have time to change

good luck

I was so afraid something would go wrong that while in the hospital ordered the same cleanser, from amazon, they had me using. When leaving they said to use the smaller bottle from there, Mayo's, until empty.

I have at least a 5 year supply of it at home now.  Never one to pass up on a deal I ordered gigantic bottle. When in hospital with complications, like pneumonia and 103 degree Temps they need to take our laptops, notebooks and smart cell phones away , lol. I now refill the hospital bottle and use it when changing my wafer. In the shower I make sure to get none of the hair conditioner to the front of my body if not wearing my bag.

I change mine every other day if I need to or not. Reason is that I cannot stand to wear a belt plus the skin under the wafer on the bottom gets too sore if I wear it longer.

The good news is I can get back into the hot tub again. I read that if we have filters on our bags we should tape across it before hottubbing or swimming in a pool. If you don't have  the manufacturers sticker use an address label. I have a 20 year supply of them from various charities wanting me to donate money.

Oh wow, water can get in? I really never understood how those built in filters work. Truthfully, mine get clogged within an hour, so they don't really work but I never thought of liquid going in or out. Eek, I taught pool classes this summer and was in the pool. Nothing came out, I don't think  but my bag did expand. Thanks for the tip; I'll do the tape thing next summer!

Yeah, I know, Richard, I've gotten no benefit from them. I understand that they work better for colostomies, which are drier. I used the stick on ostovents for a while, until they occasionally started peeling off when I least expected it. That made me nervous, so I stopped. Now I just excuse myself from the room, open the bottom of my bag and let the air out. Or warn my family in the car that I'm going to do that. No worse than what they do with their coloned bodies!

I burp mine from the bottom.  The filter things are just on some I have.  I am trying to use the first in first used method.  I had stool coming out of the filter area onto my underwear for around a week and had enough of it.  I have covered it ever since.  It also stunk when air did make it out but you are right Richard, they don't really work.
