Hi everyone

ok so I was on here a couple weeks ago discussing my J pouch surgery that was due.  Well I had my surgery on sept 27.  Surgery went well and I'm now ulcerative colitis free! Wasn't easy though.. Very brutal recovery with 9 days in the hospital.. So until I heal for my takedown  I must use my new Ostomy.  I had an Ostomy for 2 years and had my routine down but I now have a new loop Ostomy which I am not used to. They were able to use the same site which was great but I'm having leakage issues since the waste now comes out of the side and I have to use a convex wafer.  I'm only getting 1-2 day wear and the skin around the site is deteriorated and very painful.  I'm putting on Ostomy powder and 3m spray with eakin seals  to help with adhesion but it's just not working!! So frustrated! I am even trying heating pad after to help the seal work faster.  Any suggestions would be great! Maybe I need to use a different appliance? I'm using Convetec.

Thanks for listening

Sarah

What you need is ilex protectant paste; smear it around the Stoma and apply the Stoma appliance on top.

Once ilex has been applied, whilst changing your stoma appliance; leave the ilex adhered to the affected skin for as long as possible, until the ilex begins to peel off by itself, normally in big chunks; allow the skin to heal under the ilex paste.

I found ConvaTec products to be far superior and they tend to look less medical than other brands

With both my end and loop ileostomy, I used a ConvaTec two piece appliance with a Convex mouldable flange with fantastic results.

I've tried every brand available and only ConvaTec appliances provided the security I required; during that time, other than a few manufacturing issues, I never experienced leakage or skin damage whilst using the ConvaTec products.

However, after the creation of my loop ileostomy, I was advised that the ConvaTec products that I'd become accustomed to weren't suitable for use with the loop ilestomy and the Hospital provided product from a brand, which just so happens to have a contract with the Hospital; I also believe the same brand sponsors the Stoma nurse.

I foolishly persevered with such products and as a result, endured constant leakage and the most excruciating painful skin damage imaginable.

Therefore, like yourself, I turned to this very forum and Jan suggested I apply ilex paste to the damaged skin and within 3 days my sore and festering skin had completely healed.

I also reverted to using the ConvaTec products that were supposedly unsuitable; well guess what........ they were more than suitable and I continued to use them until takedown, applying the ilex paste as a precaution; as I didn't  want to endure such pain and discomfort ever again.

ilex will provide a few sample sachet prior to purchase but if you emphasise what you're experiencing, stating that a few small samples isn't enough to evaluate the product, they may send a tube of ilex paste for free.

Within the UK, ilex is now available on a NHS prescription.

I also appled a Salts Stoma Collar on top of the ilex and over the Stoma.

in fact, I use to affix the Stoma Collar onto the back of a fresh ConvaTec mouldable flange just prior to removing the  old flange.

Then, after applying the ilex paste, I could just slip the flange complete with collar over the Stoma

In the US;  Salts Stoma Collars are available from: http://myostomy.ca

Hello, Sada. Are you using a moisturizing soap or gel to wash the area? The oils in these products could be making the wafer adhesive less effective. See if using plain Ivory soap, or Neutrogena, anything that is free of moisturizer or oils will help give you a tight seal. Also make sure you press the ring all the way around, 360 dregrees, to ensure a full circle seal, and not just where you hear it "click". Before my reversal I used to leak twice a day until I figured out I wasn't pressing the ring full circle and there was a tiny gap. I thought hearing the click was good enough!
