Just a quick note to one and all...

I've had my k pouch for 36yrs now and consider myself somewhat of an expert on it...so I should know better...I drink a litre of coffee, a large glass of water and a glass of juice when I wake up and figure that I am good to go for the morning but this morning I helped the worker move some furniture and empty out a closet, clean and dust some stuff and run back and forth for garbage room...Then walked a mile to the open air market...I usually stay there about an hour...I survived about 20mins...then my head was swimming, my legs turned to lead, I could barely walk or think and my head felt like a hammer had hit it.

We have a major heat wave going here and I forgot to put on a hat or take a bottle of water with me...

Not a good thing to do when you have a pouch.

I was totally dehydrated...I crawled to the nearest grocery store, opened a bottle of water and a bag a chips and stood in the dairy section near the fridges for an hour until I could cool down, get my BP up and manage to walk home.

Dehydration is not a joke guys...please be very vigilant, drink lots of fluids, keep your sodium up and wear protective clothing...and have a safe summer.

Sharon

Having the worse heatwave in 12yrs here...days are over 40°C (in the 90's) and nights are not much cooler...even with my warning to others and perfect knowledge of the dangers of dehydration I keep doing it to myself (running around way too much and water is Not always enough when things get this hot)...if you are on foot and not in an air conditioned car or mall you need hats (something like 30% of your body's heat and moisture evaporates from your head), light clothing to cover your shoulders and arms and drink lots of fluids (salt replacement and sugar or honey)...At the risk of sounding like a broken record...be careful and stay smart or in a cool place.

It sounds as if you were diligent!  You were in the "get it done" mode.  It's good that you figured it out fast.  Some time it sneaks up on me for no apparent reason and I drink plenty of water of electrolyte concoctions.  I felt horrible Thursday night/Friday morning.  I don't know if it was the drugs they gave me while under anesthesia, stress on my body, or different pain medication. When my legs started hurting I knew it was time for supped up electrolytes.

Thanks for reminding us all

Hi everyone I'm new to the form and  my computer types when I talk so the grammar might not be perfect . I had diarrhea for two days straight after I got home from having the J pouch and when I woke up in the morning I was walking down the hall was totally blind but kept walking and when I got to the kitchen I just went flat onto the tile I had a big humongous bump on my a blackeye and my shoulder was  out of socket so now I guess I got to be careful to with drinking especially when I have diarrhea .   Be careful when you had the diarrhea I didn't even know how dehydrated I was.   Thanks for all your help and for writing this forUm.

ShellyBelly, I know what you mean about falling and hitting your head. I've done it several times in my bathroom.

I started out with dehydration problems with my first surgery and it kind of goes in spurts where I need more electolyte replacement help.  I use NUUN tabs as all you do is add them to your own water. They don't have the food coloring and sugar some sports drinks do plus they save on plastic bottles. A cyclist here told us about them around the time I came home from the hospital drinking 3 gatorades daily. I was supposed to go to ER if I threw up (my thing was projectile vomiting).  It is really tricky after our surgeries.  There's a lot of other good things on the market.

One time I acquired some stomach flu thing, so my output increased from 6-8 per day to about 14. Normally the high throughput flushes my system quickly and thing return to normal, but this bug hung on. I was on the road , 2 long flights from home, so I increased fluids some (just water, apple juice and bananas) and tried to tough it out.  Early on, my muscles started to spasm lightly in various parts of body, never had this before, wasn't sure what was going on.  The spasms increased with time to very painful, I had muscle spasms were I never thought I had muscles!  Ha.  Of course, I was on a plane and needed to poop too, in a tiny bathroom bouncing like bucking bull!.  Pretty funny hu? It was hell on earth, I laugh about it now.  When we landed the hotel night clerk drove me to the emergency room.  They put 8 liters of fluids in me over the next 24 hours.  Turns out I was flushing out the salts etc and my muscles freaked out!

I now carry dissolving Electrolyte tablets (Camelbak Elixr or Nuun Tabs) that I had to bottles water.  If I plan on hard exercise I often down a treated H2O bottle before. Probably over kill but I'm kind of freaked out it could happen again.

NM,

No matter how much we think that we know about our bodies and pouches we learn a new trick every single year (or more).

I think I drink enough but obviously heat or hot weather get the best of me and so do air conditioning and cold weather (you sweat and lose salts just as quickly in cold as in heat) and you can also lose salts when swimming!

I try to swim every morning when I am back home...I go early before it gets too hot and sunny (around 7am) but swim until 9 or 10am...then I get out of the water and my head is swimming...dizzy, dropsy and inable to walk the block back home. Even with a hat and lots of water I get dehydrated (people laugh at me when I tell them that I dehydrate when swimming!  and it is worse in the ocean with all of the salt water...unless you drink it! (not advised))

If you are like me and walk uphill a lot or if you carry heavy loads while walking then you need to multiply your input by 2 or 3 or more...

I can tell when things are going wrong when my legs start to feel heavy and difficult to move forward and then my feet cramp up...

Who would have thought that our colonless state could do so much damage...

I like your disolovable tablet suggestion...makes it easy to carry around and use in a pinch..
