So I have a defocating proctogram scheduled to get a better look at my prolapsed pouch. My doctor told me that the barium is given in an enema form, which I’m 100% happy with. I’ve had a bad history drinking barium and I just cannot get it down and whatever I can swallow I throw up, (I have a horrible gag reflex and cannot drink or eat things that make me gag). Anyway, I scheduled my test and the hospital I’m going to for it says that I will need to drink 16 fluid oz. of barium contrast as well as getting the barium enema which completely contradicts what my doctor said. My question is, has anyone had to drink the barium for the defocating proctogram or should I call my doctor and tell her what’s going on? Or should I just let the radiologists know when I arrive for my test that I will only want the enema? I know I need this test and I don’t like being difficult, but there is NO way I’m getting that barium down orally.

So I did my test and it honestly wasn’t that bad. They proved exactly as to what I’m dealing with which just gives me some sanity because for so long everyone just overlooked my issues. From being told it was just hemorrhoids, or just issues with my diet. To finally have proof is very nice.
